Help me buy a SSD + GPU

@buildzoid Upon checking some reviews the cooler is good enough to cool it by an extra 12C. Not to bad but not amazing either. I think I will stick with the Sapphire Vapor-X as it appears to keep it cooler and quiter!

EDIT: I just sold something of mine and made a nice extra 400 EUro.. so I have 1000 to spend now.
I was thinking perhaps I should get a 500GB SSD version instead of the 250?
Should I go for it?

I saw this HD 7950 for 220 euro: VTX3D Radeon HD 7950 X-Edition

This is from PowerColour I believe... is this any good? Would be nice to save 30 Euro by getting this compared to the Sapphire version?


Also on the SSD side of things I decided on a Samsung SSD 840 Basic 250gb. I'm confident that this is a good choice?

Sammys come with a 5 year warranty too . I would not get any video card and just wait it out till the next series comes but if i had to pick it be the Powercolour has i have had better experiences with them. And would surly be looking for a card with at least 3GB as i have hit the 2GB in a few games now.


If i was going buy 2 i would get get 2 SSD's and not one large one for a few reasons like less data loss if one does crap out and if say your games \ apps were on the second one and OS on the st one for best performance..

Thanks for the advice lads but I think I will just stick with the Sapphire Vapor-X Edition and forget the powercolour one! I won't bother with the 7970 as I can overclock the 7950 to reach the 7970 speeds!
The GTX 770 is simply way too expensive for what it has to over!

As for the SSD. I plan to use it for everything if at all possible? Is that a bad thing?
I just gathered an extra 400 Euro to splash so I was considering the 500GB version instead??
Would that be the best way to go?

Edit: Is that so? I had a powercolour 800GT years ago! and I loved it.. perhaps this one will actually be good enough? I don't want it getting hot and I certainly don't want to hear it!
So would you recommend getting a smaller SSD like a 60gb for the OS alone and then the 250gb for everything else?

I can't really wait it out at the moment as Total War Rome 2 is out within 2-3 weeks now! I must buy asap!

ino the prices on Intel SSD's r higher then others, but that's bcs of the tests they do to test there drives and they should be overall better and more stable that's what Intel says themself.

about the GTX 770 u haven't read any reviews? the GTX 770 is better overall also BF3, u gives u more fps in 2560×1600.

That's not what I meant, I linked that review to get you an idea on how the cooler performs as it is the same for the 7970 and 7950

I would advice you get one 120GB SSD for your OS & programs. For rest all data you can continue using your HDD either native or via USB. This really has worked out for me & enjoying speeds with my OS & response time taken by my games & my work data. I am using OWC Mercury Electra 6G which has a sandforce chip & am enjoying this piece of the hardware!

You should find which 7950 model has unlocked voltage, I'm pretty sure ASUS custom model doesn't have voltage tweaking.

mine does and the other one next to me does.

mines capable of 1250/1750 and higher on air 1200/1700 24/7

the sapphire would be my next choice then gigabyte then msi. avoid xfx

a reference 7970 would probably be a better option, especially if watercooling in the future.

But I ended up buying the Samsung 840 250Gb SSD drive and Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X ^^
So far I'm incredibly delighted with the speed of the SSD and the GPU is flawless! I can barely hear the fan pumping up as it never went above 58c and that's at 1200/1500 too! Very pleased with that so far!

I'm even gaming in Stereoscopic 3D and unlike the GTX 560Ti, it plays at a decent 50FPS average and it's very smooth!

Also... I have noticed that the Black levels appear to be better using this AMD card? Any idea as to why that is? I mean the Nvidia card produced a near cloud covering the screen as I played Metro? I barely ever needed to put the flash light on as I could usually just about see everything?
But with AMD I can't see a single thing!
Even on my brothers computer and monitor he also has noticed the improvement in visual quality?
He also bought the same card and SSD as myself


I'm after buying a new 5.1 Genius 6000 200w sound system and the Creative Sound Blaster Zx and will arrive probably on friday or else on monday! Can't wait!

Corsair are making ssd drives now too.
corsair are very impressive I remember when they just made ram and it was top of the pops
then they got into psu the first ones they made were the best on the market,
they came out with speakers next. I have the sp2500 stereo speakers and they blow everything away a I think the sp2500 was their second release, and these speakers, to me sounded much better than any 5.1 surround sound I ever heard. they even sounded like tthe three of them are in front of me and I hear stuff coming from behind me, to the point I look around. excellent stereo and more bass than u need.
now their into the ssd market,, breaking new ground with quality products I dunno what else they make but they make good quality shit.
but as we know from experience its all downhill from theire. and they will make shit and outsource their name to mister chinkyman.

Yep, once you get some SSD goodness it's kinda hard to rely back on HDDs...

I've already filled more than 1TB worth of SSDs, can't wait for them to get cheaper per GB.
