Hi all,

I know there are plenty of dedicated android sites, but I am not registered and I have been here for a while and I am looking for something specific, so please please bear with me for a while.

I want to install Cyanogenmod 11 on my Galaxy S3 mini. I have a compatible model, I downloaded all the necessary files, watched a few youtube tutorials and I have this fairly detailed plan: http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/5365...-android-4-2-kitkat-samsung.htm#.UxzclIX4Ijmc . It doesn't seem to be rocket science.

What I don't understand is one thing only. The very first step: how do I install: MaclawStudio’s TWRP Recovery v2.6.3.0 and is this equal to rooting the phone? If it's not then I should: 1.) root the phone, 2.) install the recovery tool, 3.) follow the steps described in the previous link. I haven't rooted a phone until now, but if this is the very first step (before the recovery tool) then I will look into how to root the Mini.

Thank you in advance and if this duplicates a topic, could you possibly post the link down below or send it by PM.

-find the proper rooting method for your device
-once rooted, you can install the custom recovery which is TWRP in this case, im sure there are guides on how to do this for your device

the custom recovery is like the bios where you can make your changes, flash roms, flash kernels, etc, etc.

you should really be looking at XDA for android related questions- you dont even need to be registered to view threads/links

heres the parent sticky for s3 mini:

just remember that i ever install CWM on my galaxy w, i just flash it through odin and you dont need to root it before flashing
it should be the same

Yeah I think I got some pieces of the puzzle. First, installing recovery tools doesn't equal root. 2nd there are two ways to put Cyanogenmod 11 for my phone. The first way is to install Clockwork recovery tool and manually choose the ZIP files from the Sdcard as well as manually cleaning all the user data. Second way is to use MaClaw's ALL-IN-ONE first time users combo: MaClaw's recovery tool+CM11 in one file that installs both through Odin 3.07. I am not sure which one is better. The latter one is the easier by all means. However there is no direct comparison between the MaClaw's tools and Clockwork tools. Which one has more expanded capabilities for future installs using recovery tools? I am thinking about the Clockworks's tools though- not that they are necessarily better, but there are more detailed tutorials which I can follow step by step. I will think for a bit and proceed with the flash later this afternoon.

just look at most custom rom, some prefer cwm
i prefer follow them

Some follow-up. I flashed the phone yesterday. It was successful. I opted for Clockwork tools and followed a video tutorial (I don't speak German). The results: AMAZING. I got +2000 points on AntuTu benchmark moving from "Not bad" to "Good" in the final score. The phone is faster, it has more options. I don't miss the TouchWizz from Samsung. There are some negatives, but smaller compared to the overall result. (the youtube player doesn't play with the same quality, the google play doesn't sync after logging in and have to manually install all apps, I still haven't found how to change the system fonts). I also flashed the default audio settings and equalizer with Beats Audio- and it sounds SO MUCH better than the stock one. It's like a totally different phone in my hand. These guys from Poland and other countries that worked on Cyanogen, totally deserve donation by PayPal, on to it. Awesome work hands down.

Be warned - once you go custom, you can never go back. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. I flashed my One X the first day I got it, because I just couldn't live without so many functions :P
