Help with monitor choice for 3080

Hi all

I’ve been spending quite a lot of time researching monitors since I want to upgrade my current Acer Predator 1440 144hz TN panel since I don’t quite like the picture quality anymore. I’ve come to 2 choices that are the Cooler Master GP27Q and the Samsung odyssey NEO G7 as they both use mini led technology with one being 4k and the other 1440p. In Europe with discounts there’s only about 100 dollars difference.

I use the computer for mainly gaming but also some productivity stuff (reading, notes, excel). I mostly play D4, WoW, a bit LoL and then some singleplayer games. The monitor is also gonna be hooked up to a PS5.

I was leaning more towards the Samsung one but I’m just not sure how my 3080 is gonna handle the 4k. I know there’s dlss and I’m okay with not using high/ultra all the time. The earliest I will be upgrading the GPU is in 2 years so it has to handle 4k for that long on an acceptable/good level.

Would any of you guys recommend me a way to go when I’m looking for the best fidelity upgrade?

I'd say this is down to personal preference. 4K on 27" you probably want to scale anyway. If I were you I'd go for the CM, if nothing else because the GPU will not have to work as hard, meaning less noise.

I wouldn't recommend Samsung's curved monitors, here in Taiwan we have cases of those monitors delaminating by itself but Samsung blames it on the consumer
There is also 1 case that the consumer had actual camera footage proving that no one had touched it when it delaminated but was still refused warranty

For those applications I’d shoot for 4K — you should be able to use them on ultra settings anyway. But I’d try and bump up to 32” at least.

Either way both are fine monitors… You may not notice the advantages of 4K at 27”, depending on how far away you are from your monitor. If you canid go to a retailer and check them out yourself.

27" is a puny size so you can go for 1080p gaming on this monitor if you get into performance issues at 4K and no, 27" is NOT too much for 1080p. Just don't get one feet close as most "humongous pixel size" whiners do.

3080, considering you being ready for loosening graphics settings, will do just fine anyway.

Yet I have ABSOLUTELY no idea how in the world can a curved 16:9 monitor be a thing but it's my eyes who disagree with this concept, not the whole humanity.

I'd go for 4K. With scaling of 200%, software behaves fine. Beware of red flags in the particular makes and you'll be alright.

I didn’t know that the Samsung had a 27 inch version but I was looking at the 4k 32 inch model.
I’ll probably order the 4k Samsung - thanks for all the input.

4K any day, from a 4K user since around seven years back. That is if you do any kind of work on your monitor at least. I can't go back to lower resolutions.
I've never had anything bigger than a 27" and find that a comfortable size.

Also, the CM monitors have been having some issues from what I've read, but most of those are meant to have been fixed with firmware updates.

TN panels are dead. IPS or OLED.
RTX 3080 isn't much. 2k 144hz with 27 inch is where you are at. above 27 inch you lose sharpness. 32inch in 2k is too big. That's where 4k hits the spot.

4k gaming has been possible for years. Look at my specs. I game in 4k Forza 5...Mortal Kombat, al sorts of platformers and fighting games. But for AAA, 4k isn't real. Starfield won't be happening at 4k for almost anybody.
A 3080 is basically a 4070. Most serious games will do 2k at 120-150 frames with high very high details. So that's your sweet spot. Be next year 2024, you will have 100-120 frames.

Remember this:
Frames rates are only important above 200 FPS in competitive gaming.
I have been playing COD / Warzone for years at 100 frames, no problem.

What you is need the highest level of detail for eye candy, the most beautiful version of the game's graphics. Something that will look amazing. Anything above 60 frames, while keeping the graphics at ultra etc. is what you want.

We're all different I suppose. I have a 4K 32" monitor and have to scale anyway, so 1440p would have been a better purchase.

Rtings has a good list, it's not complete though.

PCPartPicker too.

I'm meaning these specs as minimums.

It does not come from the monitor, it is more like a settings recognition, because if you connect a 4K display via HDMI 2.1 you going to get 120Hz/120fps max. Its more like a "console gamers" thing.
True, if you relate it to the topic (3080/PC-Monitor) you would suggest to connect via DisplayPort to get max Hz/fps from the display.

My comment was mostly about the fact that there are very few 120 Hz PC monitors at all, regardless of resolution, as most are either 100 or 144 Hz.

Meanwhile me with a 31.5" FullHD display:

Maybe try social distancing from your monitor. 32" is the diagonal which prefers the end user to be 48", or 4 feet (122 cm) away from a display for ideal experience.

With a 3080 I'd stick with 1440p, 4K you'd want a 4080 / 7900 XTX or 4090 ideally.

4K as said would be ok for less demanding games, but other AAAs would tank at that resolution.
If you're fine with just turning down settings on some things and "growing into" 4K then I get that though (did the same with 1440p myself years ago).

I'm holding out for 4K here but I'm just not in love with any of the more affordable IPS options TBH.

@Jjrunner it's called PPI ration. That's what I meant by 27" 2k res. So do your own research here. Basically a huge piece of plastic with low PPI will give you horrible clarity/ sharpness. You can't go to high on those inches, or else you lose. And you can't go too high on that resolution, cuz PC won't offer enough frames.
Find a sweet spot.
