Hi All,

Weird problem with home ethernet wired connections. Downloading files, sometimes stops after a few seconds, part of the file gets downloaded and stops. Similar with watching videos, e.g. youtube. Tried re-installing the OS on one machine. Tried different cable to the wall jack. Seems to happen worse on some connections than others.
Doesn't seem like a software issue, but I don't know. have verizon fios. Seems like problem started around last summer. Driving me to drinking. Any suggestions greatly apprecaited.
machines are various ages. Win10, win7.

Thanks

Hi,
Which router and I suppose switches are you using ?
Hell I can only do 4 wired on xfinity router :/
So guessing the ip's are getting weird between computer running at the same time or something :/
Just shutting down should flush the dns

^ yes, that is one of the symptoms, if the same IP addresses are "colliding" in a network.

Thanks. its a Verizon G3100 router. Yeah, only 4 lines on this router. Using 1 for an internet phone, 3 for cat6 lines around the house. Upstairs, have a Netgear GS108PE switch, where my work computer is located, and another computer with a cheap intel server mobo. Usually 2 computers on this switch are running. Over the past few months, I have reset the router a few times. Thanks, trying the ipconfig /flushdns now.

Never hurts to verify with a known good - long before current hardware - cable directly next to the router for easy swapping.

I'd also dig into the router settings and then run any logging it allows.

4 ports doesn't always mean you can freely use 4 ports. Many a person driven to drink has eventually uncovered what nobody will admit to knowledge of.

Good luck.

specs, always post the specs
ethernet adaptors, routers, cables - give proper descriptions of the setup

every single step of the way hardware can fail, and some have known problems like intels 2.5Gbe having dropouts if EEE is enabled

How long have you had Fios? Specifically, the G3100? Look in system specs to see which firmware. I have the same router, and extenders, too. Rock solid. It might be the Netgear switch causing the issues.

And, what area are you in? NYC has had a major upgrade recently.

@nomdeplume the G3100 is a monster of a router. The only thing it lacks is faster Ethernet ports.

...and apparently a foolproof means to make them all work at once. Which might have fault within some misaligned setting or physical defect he could alienate.

You seem well informed here so don't take the above as a deterrent.

Did you contact your ISP and tell them you have an issue? Maybe it is something wrong on their end? Maybe they just need to restart or reset something on their end? Maybe its a misconfiguration? Maybe someone vandalized the ISP equipment?

Thanks everybody! We've had Fios for probably 2 1/2 years. Worked very well up till last summer, probably July. Something happened.
We're in Eastern Massachusetts, about 40 minutes outside Boston. I didn't find any major upgrades poking around the web, but I don't know where to look. Thanks, I will look at the firmware. It was new in the box when we got it.

We don't usually use more than 1 or 2 ports. The phone (MagicJack) is on one port. Rarely ever used. Probably get rid of it when the contract is over. I have one line to my office, and the cheap NetGear GS108PE switch is there. I usually use one computer, sometimes two. The other lines in the house, sometimes someone is on one computer while Im working.

So, I pulled all the connections off the router, reset the router, reset the FIOS interface. Then I dragged one computer down to the basement and plugged it into the router directly. Seemed to behave about the same. Lousy, stop and start internet. I have a link to an AMD video card driver download, its about 600mb. Its my test download. Since the problem cropped up, it fails download with network timeout most of the time. Sometimes, it says it completed, but only downloaded part of the file and won't run. Arrghhh. (pulling my hair out).

Thewan, thanks, I will call the ISP, I haven't done that yet. Verizon is so MISERABLE to deal with here, their tech support is just about useless. The last time I talked to them right after the install, it was literally all day on the phone. All day. I lost a days work getting transferred from one support rep to another one.

Unfortunately, the dang power and network/phone/cable are all underground on this street. Really stupid idea. I haven't had a problem related to that before but maybe water leaked down there. I will call them tomorrow, gearing up for a miserable experience. (And Verizon has the nerve to put those ads that they have such great customer service).

Mussels: I have 5 hard wired lines down to the basement, with new Cat6 cable. 3 are connected since this router only has 4 ports, and 1 is in use by the magic jack phone. The switch in my office is a cheap one, its a gigabit rated, but cheap. I have plugged directly into the wall outlet, no change. Then, I switched cables, to another one I had, no change. I also have a 100 foot Cat 6 cable my son bought a few years ago. I ran that temporarily down the stairs to the basement, and plugged directly into the router, no change.

Re "every single step of the way hardware can fail, and some have known problems like intels 2.5Gbe having dropouts if EEE is enabled" Wooh, did not know that, thanks. I will check the router for settings. I have reset it a bunch of times by now, but never checked for EEE.

Something new: yesterday I poked all around and found a bad ethernet patch cable. I have it in a pile not used but I DID use it on some of the computers. The metal contacts in the cable have some green corrosion, like water dripped on it for years. I don't use it now, but I might have plugged it in one of the computers. Wondering if that could have damaged the router's circuit? If so, could it damage all 4 ports?

Thanks everyone. I'll post updates after I call the ISP. Also, I have an old slow router, it worked fine, just slow, we used it before switching to fios. Maybe I'll see if that works and doesn't have the glitchy problems.

Oh the pain!

We don't have any newer fast wireless computers. We have old iPad's but they are very old, and very slow anyway. The cat 6 wiring is 24ga bought bulk from Home Depot. I checked that it didn't have any kinks, but not sure if there isn't a kink someplace, maybe in the attic. will crawl around and check again. The cat 6 lines are no more than 75 feet. The ones downstairs are much shorter.

If you're getting issues directly down in the basement without the extensions, then the issue is going to be with the modem/router, it's settings, or the ISP

As an obvious example, can you change your DNS server?
Run a VPN?

DNS servers can help route traffic better (ISP DNS will route to what's cheapest for them, usually) and a VPN can bypass traffic throttling - these arent things us aussies deal with, but it's a big problem for the USA without net neutrality

EEE Is on the adaptors themselves, not the router. Realtek and Intel have issues with their 2.5Gbe adaptors, they just drop out randomly - intels got a new driver out that disable EEE as a workaround.

Try the other router. Also, in settings on G3100, look to make sure SON, self organizing network, is O-F-F. Buggy feature that causes headaches. Otherwise, i suggest going from ONT to the old router.

What is the ONT, the box that turns fiber into usable internet? I have a newer Nokia black box, and use ethernet cable. Yours might use coax, does it? If so, and it got wet, it will def cause problems. If coax, you can replace that, or switch to coax for trouble shooting. You might have to call Verizon and ask to "provision your ONT to coax" or the other way..."provision the ONT for ethernet cable." And what speed do you subscribe to? If it's a slower speed, you might have the older Actiontec that is dying. Its a big grey/tan box.

Hope the storm treated you OK.

Good luck
