High fps/hz but game feels extremely slow/choppy

Hi guys,

Let me first preface by saying this is not the game's problem as my PC and 2nd laptop both run the game perfect.

I am experiencing a weird problem. For 2 years I have played a FPS game called "War Rock" with no issues. It genuinely relies on the single core CPU to run well and doesn't make much use of the GPU. My CPU is running at a stable 3800mhz with 80c temps. Out of the blue in the past 3 weeks, the fps counter in game still shows my fps at a constant 140 yet it feels like I am playing 60 fps. The game feels like I am moving through glue and each motion is slow, especially when firing bullets.

Here is a list of the things I have tried/confirmed:
  • Disabling RTX 2060 and using Intel graphics instead
  • Nvidia settings I have tried: V sync off / on - tested both. Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames: 1
  • Restorted default NVidia settings then rebooted.
  • Windows game mode on / off - tested both.
  • Mouse polling rate is at 1000.
  • Checked hertz is indeed 240 in windows settings and NVidia panel.
  • Ultimate performance power plan on.
  • Extreme Performance and Gaming Mode ON in MSI Dragon Centre.
  • Both CPU and GPU running at 40% when game running.
  • No monitoring software running while playing.
  • My SSD has 200 GB free out of 512 GB
Some extra info; My laptop monitor has been going black sometimes recently and I have to manually adjust it for it to come back on again. Could this be the problem? the 240hz is no longer performing on the panel?

Thanks, hopefully I can find a solution

MSI GS66 STEALTH
NVIDIA RTX 2060
16GB DDDR RAM
i7 10750H
512GB SSD
IPS-Level 15.6" FHD (1920x1080), 240Hz panel
Windows 10 21H2

Gpu or monitor at fault...

Many seems to forgets that at networked gaming, the network response this counts too.

I've tested in the game offline mode in a private server and the problem persists.

At much older INTEL CPU, first generation quads Q6600, there was BIOS setting, this assisting games designed for single CPU.
At my motherboard for i7 4-gen, there is no such BIOS setting.

I do still play Unreal Tournament, off-line, with out issues.

Other workarounds:
Reduce game analysis at 1024x768
Change from DX to OpenGL

I don't know anything about the game but have you tried testing the game with your laptop's refresh rate set to something lower like 120Hz or even 60Hz?

60Hz is noticeably slower once you're used to high-refresh, but it shouldn't ever feel dramatically laggy or choppy - that indicates other issues.

If a game doesn't feel pretty good at 60Hz vsync without dropped frames then you definitely have issues, and 60Hz is super-compatible with just about any game from the last 15 years, so even if it has problems with newer high-refresh displays it should work flawlessly at 60Hz.

Just tested - problem still persists with 60hz. Bullets still firing noticeably slower.

Best way I would describe it is that the game feels like 140 fps but the moment bullets are fired, it feels like they are shooting at 60 fps although it is showing 140.

Hello Kiriakost I'm very curious about that old bios setting you described to assist old games designed for single CPU, as I'm having this sensation of feeling visual lag/sluggish, like 30fps, while playing old games like counter strike 1.6

I have a ryzen 5 1600 paired with EVGA 1060, tried a lot programs like nvidia inspector, in the past I checked for multiples drivers, I also remember to unlock hidden settings of my motherboard back in that time of 2017 when ryzen appeared in the market. But at this point If possible to find a similar option to that what you described of Quads 6600 as I used to play counter strike 1.6 very professional with a dual core or pentium 4 very good, but then when I moved to a i3/i5 back in that time of 2014-2015 nothing where the same as 2006-2009. and even now with the ryzen 5 1600 still the same as 2014-2015.

if you can remember what bios setting was that one that used to be present on old quads q6600 i will highly appreciate, thanks.
