I was looking in my bios the other day and saw that option, its under hyper-threading for my Intel Xeon L5640.
But i can't find any information about it online, and i think i am typing it in correctly. just curious is this a option that i need to turn on? does it improved performance?

also Timeshift does not work on certain computers, people said to disable hyper-threading, if i do this, would my game performance degrade for other games?
(most likely i am going to buy xbox 360 and just buy timeshift , just was curious about it)

I’m not sure about the IO question, but can answer on HT.

Timeshift worked fine for me last year. I never turn HT off. I caould try against n this evening. That being said, BIOS should allow you to turn HT on and off, and on and off. It shouldn’t be limited. This would allow you to turn it off if it turns out you need to for Timeshift.

To buy Timeshift and an old 360 just to play that game seems like a lot of expense.

I've tried HT disabled on my 5820K and Quake Champions ran even worse. I frankly never disabled HT and I've had it since Core i7 920 like what, 10 years ago now? Just keep it enabled.

HT enabled chips are quite different from those without HT when it comes to performance if you disable HT.

I have no good experiences from disabling it on my 8700K. It is less stable for some reason under overclocks.

Well i was buying 360 anyway , i have alot of xbox original games. Timeshift new is under 20 and its worth the money. Yea if you go over to the steam forums , timeshift doesn't work and i tried it using windows 10 and windows 7 on my computer, it crashes when shaders are being loading in. people say is because of HT and having more than 4 cores or something.

Yeah, I think they are wrong about the HT, since like I said I’ve only ever played it with HT on.

I last played the GOG version a year ago so I will make a point this evening to give you any feedback I find. Who knows, if it doesn’t work it’s more likely a victim of a rogue Windows update.

Why don't you try it and see? Then let us know what you see. Be sure to say how you use your computer.

Yea i am , i use my computer for everything, but main purpose is gaming. I use workstation stuff for gaming all the time now. Anyways, will report back later or tomorrow.

The optimization question is very complex. TLDR in your case nothing will probably change at all. However specifically detailing the I/O optimization option and not HT itself being on or off, I/O optimization in the context of that specific setting on that specific machine refers to some custom code dell uses to improve the I/O latency on there systems when HT is enabled and the I/O system is flooded with requests. This isnt very common on desktops so it makes sense you would see this option on a T3500 which was intended to be used by professionals that may be doing high parallelism.

IOPA was only last year suggested as a standard and prior to this to the best of my knowledge I/O bandwidth management on high thread count machines was always handled in a closed source manufacturer specific firmware setting.

If you want to read more about the problem in general (though it doesn affect you) you can read the IOPA white paper here where they outline the problem. This BIOS setting was standard on alot of dell blade servers as well IIRC.

I turn off HT and timeshift loaded up just fine. However, the game stutters like crazy and its unplayable. I'm just going to buy xbox 360 anyway and buy the game. Got a fast CPU and can't play timeshift haha. It's only one game, so no big deal i guess, all my other games work perfectly fine.

Ok, I just loaded the GOG version of the game and it ran perfect 60fps on 2560x1440, and looks better than I remember it. No stutters. HT was on. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Yes its a beautiful game :) Well, your computer is here vs my computer. From what its mention on steam, cpus with more than 6 cores can't run the game or something like that. So i guess my CPU is out of luck and yes i tried the GOG version also.

Just an update. I set it 4 cores from msconfig to load after restarting, the game works. but its really stupid to keep doing that just to play one game and it might be harmful to keep changing a certain amount of cores to start up every time. once i load the game, i tried tabbing out and change the cores from task manager, but that doesn't do anything. But yea i got it working with HT enable, just have to play it using 4 cores. bit of a hassle to change it all the time. And that's not something i am interested in doing.
