Higher temprature after thermal paste update

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my gigabyte rtx 2060 oc, my card was working over 76C then I decided to reapply the thermal paste. I used zalman stg2, then my gpu is working higher temprature like 79C-80C.

I think the memories is working too hot because, in gpu-z which is using gpu memory less and using gpu 100%, my card's max temp is 62C. But in games, the card is 79-80C

Do you have any idea?

I am not sure about that Zalman paste. Based on my experience the onloy thing I could reccomend is to use Noctua's NTH1 or NTH2 paste.

All newer GPUs including yours have a temperature that they are "programmed" to stay below. They do that by increasing the fan RPM (rotation speed). If, and I doubt that, yours no longer can maintain that temperature then it is because your already reached 100 % RPM. Both GPU-Z and MSI afterburner (plus all other GPU monitoring tools for Windows) will show you what speed the fans are running in percentage and sometimes also in RPM (revolution per minute). Sure a bad application of TIM will increase the RPM and if you hit max, and then the temperature will go higher then the normal temperature. So check your RPM % . 100 % then you have to increase air flow in your case or regret that you didn't buy a better GPU regarding their cooling solution.

You have to dismantle it and verify that the thermal paste has covered the entire surface of the GPU.

Either you have put little or the one you put does not reach the whole surface.

Then verify that all thermalpads are correctly in place

Might not have anything to do with the thermal paste. GamersNexus very frequently mentions how it can be difficult to get even mounting pressure on GPUs. This is likely what happened. You should probably remove and re-mount the heatsink.

OP needs to answer questions about fan speed, but your are all right that all sorts of things can go wrong during applying new TIM. OP went back to playing and left this forum 3 minutes after posting so it can't be a major problem.

Idk why you thought paste was an issue with a new card, best option now is to reapply a better paste, mx4 is cheap and you can get it everywhere.
