I don't have a wireless router, so i was thinking if there was a way to get Wifi without swapping my router.

What would be the best way?

Just add a wireless gateway/access point.

Do you have a smartphone with a 3G/4G data plan? If you do, you can get wifi through your phone. :)

using thru phone usually makes it kinda more expensive. except your operator offers you data package monthly example

No, Wi-Fi is free. In fact, it has nothing to do with the cellular network.

As for the topic, what is it you want to do? If you want your own Wi-Fi network, just buy a wireless router. Finding accesspoints without any router functionality nowadays is close to impossible. Set it to bridge mode, disable DHCP and connect your LAN to the LAN port of the router which is now nothing more than an AP.

get a cheap dd-wrt capable wifi router, set it to bridge mode, as Dan said, and voila you have wifi.

It's how i configured mine even though i could have just used the wifi router for everything.

Why bother with dd-wrt? Any cheap router can run in bridge mode. In fact, turning off DHCP usually is enough to get a router to work as bridge. Just ignore the WAN port.

thats not WiFi..... thats wireless internet.

the easiest is buy wireless router, now is just kinda cheap. if you need just wifi connection you can buy these with standard features

The only way i could get mine to work was by using dd-wrt, even though the stock firmware supposedly supported it. There are a lot of cheap routers DD-WRT capable, so if he can't get it to work by using the standard firmware, at least he has the option to use DD-WRT to get it to work. The more options the better imo, especially if it doesn't cost any extra.

Yes sorta, micropage7 was onto the right idea, sorta ... Some mobile devices have built-in ability to create a Wireless HotSpot(thus, creating a WLAN).

The HTC Thunderbolt is an example, and there are many others; depending on the carrier the plan and phones vary, from free to expensive plans; and, phones... oh well, they can be pricey.

@CDdude55> You just need an AP, instead of investing in a wireless router(If, you have an available port for it).

Like this:TEW-637AP

thats still wireless via a WiFi hop.....

OP wants WiFI to his wired internet connection from his PC/Laptop/phone

he asked how to add a Wi Fi gateway to his wired network, chances are the device he wants to use wifi with already has a Wlan card built in thus this whole wifi/wireless via phone is moot.

I know what it is, and I was clarifying your posting.
And, I know what he is trying to do.

Don't take it so personal.
