i have my media computer all done and running great at this point. i have found that the best place for me to hide it [this will keep the wife happy], is on a table that would be a few inches above my sub woofer. we seldom "rock out" anymore, so im not worried about vibrations. what i wanted to know is if the magnet in the sub woofer would mess with the computer? and i promise that one day all these noobish questions will stop. thanks!

It would likely be fine. The harddrive would be the only concern and I don't think they're as sensitive to magnets as people use to assume. I tried wiping one with a neodymium once and nothing happened.

Depends on the strength of the magnetic field produced by the sub I believe. Many home theather subs are magnetically shielded already. I believe the HDD is the most sensitive component to magnetic fields... so if the location of the HDD is far enough from the sub that you cannot detect the magnetic field you should be set. I'd use a steel screw on a string (or something similar) to determine if the sub is in fact producing a magnetic field.

Take this with salt... I could be horribly wrong :o

It depends on the specifications of your speaker system.
I don't know about your Kenwood (do you have the manual somewhere?) but when I got the Z-5500 it states that the satellites are fully magnetically insulated but the sub-woofer must be kept some 30 inches (I stand to be corrected re precise distance) from the pc. I never really bothered because my sub is some 1.5 meters away from the pc.

Edit: I found the instructions - Position the Sub-woofer at a distance of at least 60cm (23.6 inches) from "any electronic device". That only counts for the Z5500 though.

I have my sub from my Logitech Z-5500 about 4" from my case (and where my hard drives are located) and have had no problems for the year I've had it. In all honesty I would be more worried about loud bass causing a head crash than the magnets destroying the drive, but I don't think either are probable. Here is a picture of my setup so you can get an idea of how close mine is - look at the sub on the right side. I guess it's double proof that none of the VHS I have been transferring for archival purposes have been erased either, and the VCR is right on top of the sub.

I have a similar setup as the von and i can confirm no issues with putting a large sub right next to a computer.

in fact my sub is about the same level and literally 3 inches away from the case

a good way to check is find an old crt monitor and see how close the sub can get to it before the monitor shows weird colors on it.

thanks to everyone, i cant find manual, but i tied a screw to a thread and i cant detect any magnetic activity, so i will try it this weekend and give it a go. thanks! :respect:

99% of HT speakers, subs included, are magnetically shielded. I would be more concerned about vibrations and would look into getting some type of isolating materials inbetween your PC & shelf? to help absorb some of the vibrations. Styrofoam/old mousepads etc should work fine :)

my woofer is behinde my monitor and right next to the cpu and is magnetically shielded and its working out fine for me.

Depends on if it's magnetically shielded and for sound performance depends on the type of sup you use.

Mines behind me about 7 feet as it fills the room better and by putting mine near me \ the computer kills more of the extended bass.
