How do i know if a psu has gone bad?

I got this seasonic 1000watt platinum power supply laying around. It was purchased from a 2nd hand desktop build. The guy bought it in 2015 and used it for gaming only like overwatch. I believe him too because of various reasons. Anyway half a year ago, i stopped using it because the 2nd hand desktop wont boot from cold one day. Swapped the psu and everything's fine. Although i highly suspect it's the motherboard that's gone wrong because the motherboard had issues with booting like ram error. Ram was tested on my 2nd pc and it was fine. So now, it's either the board or psu. But the desktop has been sold now except the psu that's laying around. I tested it with the paper clip trick and seems to be working fine. Even connected some fans to it and everything seems fine. Is the psu bad? because i heard of psu degradation over time.

Hi,
Post and or search the exact model sure something will popup and maybe even a review +-

The only way would be to actually test it with a real load on it. Jumping the psu means it turns on. That doesn't mean its working right at all. You can try one of those power supply testers, it will tell you if voltages are good...but that isn't the end all of testing...just what a novice can do at home. Try testing it in a known good PC to see if it works. ;)

A 5 year old seasonic 1000w unit should still be fine today. Degredation isnt 100W / year or something. Surely it can still output its label being a high quality seasonic unit.

I'm kind of afraid that it'll damage the pc i connect it to lol if the psu has really gone bad.

that is a quality unit with an arseload of protections. I wouldnt worry about it.
Thanks mate, ill try it out with my dad's new build. He wants to reuse this psu. If it's still good, i dont see any harm in it then.

Hi,
Just make sure the cables are inserted well on the board and unit.
