How to check CPU speed

Hi,

I'd like to know, since CPU clock reported by sensors tools (like task manager or HWINFO) are not good indication of what CPU is really doing : what to check to see if the CPU is really doing what ever he can to handle the tasks it's asked to do ?

If I see 4Ghz during low load, and the same at load but with more power drawed, how can i know the real frequency it's at ?

Thank you all for your input. I am going crazy with my current laptop which not seemed to reach what it should.

Not exactly sure what you are looking for , but here's how this works :

A CPU has several power states , fixed frequencies at which they run based on load/temperature or whatever the OS or you as user want. Power draw is not directly tied with frequencies , the CPU can stay at it's maximum frequency but power draw can vary wildly , there is no such thing as a "real" clock . The clock of each of these power states is fixed , if it says 4 Ghz , it's 4 Ghz regardless of load.

Things like Task manager and HWINFO report clock speeds exactly as to what they are. What they don't report with accuracy is whether or not those clocks were still in place in between readouts , and there is nothing you can do about that.
