is there any way to turn off hyperthreading? i cant seem to find it anywhere in the bios. also the bios on this computer looks like it has way to few options.

Lackluster bios is a pretty common thing with hps.

Intel XTU may be able to turn it off. Beyond that your options are few.

Maybe if you tell us why you want to disable it, we can help you sort out your issues. Note in terms of performance, it is typically best to keep it enabled. In terms of security, unless you run untrusted code in a high security environment, you don't keep your OS or your security apps current, and you (or other users of your computer) tend to be "click-happy" on unsolicited downloads, links, attachments and popups , then again it is typically best to keep it enabled as it is not likely security will be an issue either.

If you do want more advice in this area, please fill out your System Specs so we know what kind of hardware we are dealing with.

I mean, it's generally good yes, but there are use cases for turning it off too. But they usually involve a 6-core or higher chip.

Without hearing his system specs we can only guess...

I'm only here to try and understand the logic (or lack of - aside from @Bill_Bright's previous post about potential security issues) of purchasing a HT-enabled CPU, just to turn the HT off and run it as a lesser unit.

Surely there is no sense to this... or maybe I'm just confused?

But, aside from the BIOS or limiting the amount of cores windows see's (which wont disabled HT in a typical sense), I don't think there is a way to disable HT.

Yeah, that's why I said "typically" instead of "always".

To me, there is no logic in buying a HT-enabled CPU if you plan to immediately disable it. That makes no sense to me either and it suggests (to me) - unless the price was just "too good to be true" - a lack of homework was done before selecting and buying the CPU.

But if one already owns the CPU and later discovers having HT enabled presents an unacceptable security risk (perhaps due to a vulnerability that was discovered after purchase), or having HT enabled is adversely affecting performance of their particular tasks or program, then it might make sense to disable it.

There is a HUGE difference between there being a vulnerability in a processor (or program), that vulnerability being "exposed" and a bad guy being able to by-pass all security measures unnoticed to exploit that vulnerability.

It is true a serious vulnerability was discovered that did impact security - but only under very specific scenarios rarely found out in the real-world was that vulnerability "exposed". And while the vulnerability did affect 100s of millions of devices, I am not aware of any verified reports of any computers that were exploited by bad guys. So again, if we keep our computers updated, and avoid being "click-happy", unless there is a valid technical/performance reason to disable HT, it is typically best to keep it enabled.

Hey everyone. So in terms of specs i have a i9-9900k. And as some of you may know the new COD just came out. I have a RTX 2080 TI and still i cant get even get stable 140fps even with the lowest settings on everything. Since i dont think this can be right, i looked for solutions online and i found a thread where many people had the same issue. After somebody said to turn HT off, most of the users said that this had fixed their problem and they were able to run the game at 200+fps on highest settings. They also said its common for Modern Warfare games to run much smoother once HT is disbaled. thanks in advance for all the help:)

Then I say try it and see. You can always enable it again.

Neither of those options will really disable hyperthreading...

Intel XTU is really the only thing I think that may be able to do it in software, maybe.

Putting 8 in here will turn a 8c16t cpu into a 4c8t thread cpu.

@sk4le
Check if there are bios updates for this machine. These may introduce new options.
If not, contact HP that they are missing something important.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
you can use process lasso to auto-bind tasks to non-HT cores. That has virtually the same effect.
