how to install OS on external hdd?

I bought an enclosure for my old IDE HDD. It is connects to a computer via USB 2.0 and it comes with its own wall outlet power adapter. Can i install WinXp on it? How?

You'd have to remove the drive, place it in a computer, then install on it.

Can you even boot to enclosure? I know you can boot USB obviously, but this would be slow being USB2.0, surely...

bootable USB devices are definitively possible. I'd just install it internally and then stick it in the USB enclosure and see if it works though xD
