Hi all

I have windows running on old HDD and want to move it to an SSD. Is this possible? If so how do I go about doing it. I'm looking to buy a cheap ssd just to boost system boot up times and general responsiveness.

Macrium Reflect or any other decent Cloning software. Seagate also has cloning software avialable but I am not sure if you need one of their drives to use it.

If you have a Samsung SSD, Samsung has software that makes it really easy. I recently migrated my Windows 10 install to an SSD from an ancient HDD that only supported SATA 2 and had a molex power connector AND SATA power connector.

If you're technically inclined, boot a Linux distro (live from an USB stick, no need to install anything). From there, you can use dd to copy the contents of your drive. At the end, you will want to create additional partitions or resize the existing ones.

Evo series?

Will this improve my gaming performance at all because I am already running games off an nvme SSD it's just my operating system that's on an HDD so boot times are abit long.

OS on SSD is always better.

However
a cheap ssd
without any cache won't be that good...

I would save up some more so you can buy a reputable one.

Western Digital Green 240Gb 2.5" SATA SSD NAND? Or is this too cheap?

870 Evo or MX500

For the mx ones is there a difference between mx and BX?

Crucial if I'm not mistaken.

MX is good, BX is bad.

Hi,
Yeah MX series all the way.

Think clonezilla is the best free cloning tool

Otherwise if you have a spare hdd or room on the original hdd just put a current system image on it
Make the macrium reflect winpe flash recovery media "reflect prompts you to do this on first start"
After boot to it after installing the new ssd and point reflect to the hdd with the system image.

Pretty good tutorial here
