hey guys, need a little help...

i am changing out a PSU for a friend in a HP 734n "store bought" tower....the first PSU was to small (230w) and a 450w antec is replacing it.....

the problem
about 4 seconds after we power it on it shuts down...no post or anything....all the drives power up and spin, but it shuts off before it can even post...i have done the basics checked all connections and what not...nothing is out of place...the mobo says ATX for the PSU molex, yet it misses the 4pin power molex....not sure if that old of a mobo just doesn't need it or if we need a diff. psu...

i have heard about older hp's needing to have wires xchanged on the molex, but i don't know if this one needs it....

hp rig
amd 2400 socket 462
1gb off brand RAM
6800xt 512mb agp 8x
80Gb IDE HDD
antec truepower 450w psu
mobo is whatever brand hp used for this system Pavillion 734n

any help would be great...thanx guys....

am I right in saying that your psu is 20 pin and your mobo is 24 pin?

If I'm right, then get an adaptor to go from 20 to 24 pin.

Nah remember the really old 4 pin connectors that are shaped like SATA connectors? Thing is, that HP is so gay to use them so you cant upgrade. Thus buy a new motherboard.

thanks for the reply guys....

after many hours of thinking and testing, i finally found what was wrong...we were trying to keep alive a system that just needed to die....

so i got him set up with a e4300 with the cheapest c2d Gigabyte mobo....$200 with the HyperTX cooler....

problem is solved..:rockout:

thanks again guys i really think that the mobo just died...it had issues before the new psu and case...

good luck my child - for now you have gone to a better place......

no not heaven.......................LANDFILL.............lol
