All,

I've got a real head scratcher going on here. I've just upgraded my processor from an i5-4570 to an i7 4790K. Only issue is when I seat the new processor the machine will power up for 2 seconds then shut down and cycle until I pull the plug. Exactly as if the processor power connector is missing. No POST. If I re-seat my i5, machine works perfectly.

I did the due diligence and checked the motherboard compatibility (Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3), which is fine.
I've check a 2nd, more powerful 650w PSU, which works fine on my i5 but not on the i7.
I've also checked 2 CPU fans, both work.

I'm lost with what it could be. I've looked at the BIOS, which is out of date. Currently running F6 and there is F8 available on the website - however there are no drivers compatible for Windows 10 64-bit.

Could it be anything else? I've checked all cables. Besides the BIOS version, the only other thing I can think of is a faulty i7 processor.

Thoughts and questions welcomed.

Thanks,
Steve.

The first thing to do is update that BIOS to the new F8 and then go from there.

Reset Bios to Default first, then flash, reboot, reset your settings. Use the old CPU while you do this.

^ I concur with that.

B4 updating your bios, i would look to see how old your current bios is.if it isnt older than the 4i90k than id have to imagine an updtte wont help.

Personally id search for others with similar issues, then go from there after.
its just that normally, when a system works fine, then when a part is swapped out, and doesnt work its the Part that is being swapped that is the culprit, either directly or indirectly.

Also, r u CERTAIN this chip is viable? Did you buy it new? Or from a site like ebay?

**edit** after a single search i noticed that F7 is the bios that is supporting for 4790k.

Did you reset the CMOS?

Thanks to all who contributed. Updating the BIOS to F8 enabled the processor to work. Thanks again :-)
