i7 upgrade from i5?

Hey all,
Long time no posting. My wife is looking to use my PC for working from home. PC is 7ish years old running an i5-750. Her work is very CPU intensive, and I'm wondering your thoughts on me simply tracking down an 1156 i7 processor to change out, or if I should just build a new system over? So far, I've only looked on the egg and found one for $220ish.

My system specs are currently what I'm running.

What kind of application does she use?

Depending on how CPU depedent her work is HT from i7 would be well worth the extra.

If you can get a used one on E bay for $30 and your board supports it then do it. But otherwise just use it as it is. i5 -750 is still decent

Should be able to get an 860 for under 100. Otherwise don't bother..... And I've checked amazon, they can be had for under.

Check out Xeon Processors if the board can use them and her work requires cpu intensive applications.

i7 is goning to be a notable upgrade, xeon are too, it depends what you look for, with an i7 you will be more than pleased i know, i can bet that,

See if Mb supports Xeon X3480 then see if you can find one reasonably priced

That is the Best you can get for 1156 Socket
I7 ver is
i7-880 Processor Same spec as X3480 ( xeon probably easier to find and cost less )

a xeon e3 v3 1235 costs about as much as an i5 and is an i7 - the gpu

should work in most boards that will take and i5/i7

it's haswell gen so there might be and even faster one with broadwell or sky lake tech

there are other considerations as well. faster ram and sata 3 being large ones.

the cheapest route is a used x3480 as recommended above or an i7-880 . both are a little over $100 on ebay, that'll buy you hyperthreading and a small core clock boost ( 20-30% gain in cpu performance) . outside of that you may also be able to overclock your existing system and gain some additional speed.

given a choice between an i7-880 and an x3480 it really comes down to whichever you can find cheaper.

edit: more thoughts.
now the rest is going to depend on what app it is how & how well it threads.
for example for around $600 you can get an x99 board and a 12core xeon ( used) and a good amount of ram that will give you a 300% increase in raw cpu but doesn't perform as well in games or lightly threaded apps.
or you for ~$500 you move to the i7-6700k that'd probly be closer to double your current speed. but with much faster single core speeds which is better for gaming and lightly threaded apps.

Just go for the i7 if you get it really cheap 50 bucks maximum. Performance wise it's surely worth it, however.
