So just looking for some thoughts on hoe I can improve my wireless speed eithout purchasing a separate router...though that may be the best. So I have 1.2gb through xfinity, and i currently have a xb8 router, tests at 936mb using a cat5 cable(planning to test again when i find my one cat 6), but my wireless speeds vary wildly being on room over. Occasionally I get 800, normally I get about 400mbs. Any thoughts, or is the xfinity router just that bad from wifi?

Cat6 won’t help you. You won’t pull more than 1G. The router port AND your device port need to support higher than 1G speeds. As you are getting 936 it sounds to me like you are capping one or the other.

some will say you can push higher like 990 but this will vary a bit by device.

moving on a single source of wifi is just bad in general. But I work with APs a lot so I’m pretty bias.

A few things you can do. 5ghz is weak lots of things interfere.

- location get it somewhere in the open not surrounded by walls or TVs etc.

- look in the settings and see if has the ability to automatically select channels. Most consumer garbage gets programmed to sit on a few freq.

- try playing with Amy kind of QoS setting but depending on implementation this can affect latency.

Like Solaris said, your ethernet speed is maxed out. No amount of cable improvements will help. The communication via ethernet takes up more than just pure data transfer. So a 1Gbit connection will end up with a max transfer speed of about what you get. Give or take a bit.

Put your router up high if you can. That will eliminate many potential blocking elements. If you're able, check for any other strong wifi signals nearby. Hope your router auto function manage to pick a different channel. Or set one manually.
Since you are in the adjacent room, what kind of wall is there between? Any large furniture? Wardrobe? Anything metal is basically bad. Mirrors are metal covered glass for example.
