Hello, a friend is considering buying a 2TB WD Black SN850X, but his pc is a bit old. His motherboard is an MSI B365M PRO-VDH, According to chatgpt, this ssd might not work with that motherboard, is that true?

It should work with the caveat that it will be PCIe 3.0 speeds, there's only 1 M.2 slot, and bar any rare incompatibility issue (which you can run into with any motherboard but it's exceedingly rare).

Not that PCIe 3.0 is that big of a drawback, you still get the latency and random performance improvements that are mostly responsible for enhanced responsiveness.

Yes, it's compatible. It won't run full speed. But as @evernessince says - it'll be just as snappy as it should be. Make sure that the SN850X's heatsink doesn't touch the GPU though. With that motherboard's layout, it could be a concern. Sinkless version + a slim third party heatsink will do the trick, if it's the case

You are interested in a gen4 TLC 3D NAND NVMe marketed for gaming performance.
You wish to have it interface with the native gen3 M.2 slot on a B365M board.
This is acceptable function and performance similar to a Steam Machine.

It is not free. The price is the first sata connector. This is probably worth it.

SATA1 will be available, because that limitation only applies to B-key M.2 devices (a.k.a. "M.2 SATA"). M-key only NVMe M.2 devices don't use SATA - so, there is no reason to lose only one port when it's installed.
