I had originally Vista installed on the first partition, then I installed XP on the second partition, and now I can't select Vista to boot up. :banghead: I wanted to have an option at startup of selecting which system to boot, but XP didn't make that option and now I don't know how to boot into Vista anymore. :banghead: Any tips, ideas, fix for this?

On another PC I had no problem installing Vista on the second partition after XP was installed on the first, because it automatically put up the selection on startup which system you want to boot up, but now since I did it reversed, XP after Vista it doesn't work. :banghead:

Traditionally you need to install the older operatings first (as you did before), because the newer OS will recognise the older one, but not the other way around.

I'm not as familiar with Vista as I am XP - there may be something you can do with the updated version of the ARC path in Vista. In XP it was the contents of the boot.ini file that pointed to the OS and where to load from.

Yup...I had the exact same problem.

Refer to the above program.
Vista has a different bootmanager to XP, its a smartass bastard.

Thank for the help guys! :respect: vista boot pro does work and made my Vista boot up! :toast: I put in the system selection and installed the vista boot loader with the program, so when I select Vista it boots up properly, but if I select XP it gives me an error to put in the install CD and doesn't wanna boot up in XP. :banghead: I'll have to figure out somehow how to make BOTH to work properly and boot up correctly.

Boot from the Vista DVD and on the screen where you're prompted to "Install now", select "Repair your computer".

The next screen searches for Vista installations, there should only be one, so click Next.

This loads the System Recovery Options screen. Select the option Startup Repair. This looks for problems and automatically fixes them.

Then reboot.See if that works.

OR:

Have you tried booting from Vista dvd and at "Repair My Computer" click on "Command Prompt" and use the following

bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot

Then restart.

I tried that fix with the vista DVD, but it couldn't find any problems and didn't fix it, and Vista didn't boot before, but fixing it with vista boot pro Vista boots up properly, but now XP doesn't boot. :banghead:

EasyBCD can be used to make alot of changes to the Vista bootloader.I have not used it alot but might help you out here.

That's where the trial and error comes in. Install VistaBoot Pro on Vista now, and try tweaking the bootloader some more. It's probably looking in the wrong place for the XP bootloader.

Have you tried a regular boot manager like paragon or acronis ?

Finally got it to work! I set up the Vista Boot loader to load Vista from the C drive and had to set up XP to be loaded from the C drive also! Before I selected the D drive to load XP from and didn't work. I guess some XP system files are on the C drive that it needs to load up even though XP is installed on the D drive. :banghead:
