Intel mobile CPU's F'en with my brain

I thought I had it figured out socket 479=M & socket 478=P and there not compatible even though there the same physical socket. But then I'm looking on eBay and running some parts# [because there/Cnets listing system is a joke] and seen these specs.

What the:wtf: I'm I nuts or is Intel labeling both 479&478 CPUs socket M in the product name. So I figured they make two versions but then seen the wiki for C2Ds and there listed as skt.M.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors
Why the hell does this have to be so mind boggling:confused: is it that hard to use two different product names so a moron like me can simply buy a cpu? Or are these compatible with both sockets?
So does anyone know if one of the skt.478 will work in my skt. M laptop?

Socket M runs at 667 FSB max.
Socket P runs at 800 FSB max.
Later version of socket P will run at 1066 FSB max. (P9xxx cpus)

But there are few exceptions, it is the best that you take a look at this page which you linked ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors ) and make a choice accordingly.

When I build mobile platforms, I generally look at FSB. The socket 478 and 479 numbers are pointless as sellers very often make mistakes on defining the sockets.
It is also advised to look at your BIOS date and look at released date of CPUs you are looking for. If your BIOS date is earlier than a CPU you want to buy, chances are that you will need a BIOS update for microcode update.

Added: Meanwhile the best socket M cpu you can buy is T7400 or T7600.

I have a socket P478 T9700 that runs 1066FSB.

IDK why Intel blends the 478 Socket type, it is less confusing than Nvidia's scheme though.

So what your saying is go by the wiki and it will all be good?
I just bought a cpu on eBay listed as skt.M with 667mh FSB and it turnout to be a skt.P:cry: so I'm a bit frighted to end up with another bunk cpu.
I have a tecra M7 with latest bios so I think I'm good up to t7600 and I've seen some people have upgraded to them.

Well, yes. I'd say you'd be safe to use the list as a reference, but what cpu did you buy which turned out to be socket P ?

In general, the naming for CPU is quite clear - unless - you look into low end mobile cpus where the namings go nuts.

P9xxx is for socket P rev 2.
T8xxx ~ T9xxx is for socket P rev 1. Later, intel introduced T7xxx and lower for socket P which started the confusions.

Socket M never goes past T7xxx. As far as I know the only socket M cpus in T7xxx area is T7400, T7600, and T7200. I wouldn't go for lower end socket M cpus.

well I went cheap and got a T5250 for $22 shipped to replace my core duo t2400. I really just want 64bit support[4gb ram] and hopefully drop the vcore9[ if possible with laptops] to save battery life. My goal is to keep it under $100 so the t5600 is probably what I'll be getting, they go for around $60.

Just thought I'd update:D
Cpu's in and all is GO!!! Win7 went from 2.4-5.0 for the CPU for whats thats worth. I'm actually liking this tablet now and after I learn some design apps I'll love it, maybe? This is my first laptop and the limited bios is really bugging me. Toshiba has some stupid settings in there that just can't be fixed, without some bios modding. Thanks to all that posted here:rockout:
