Is my configuration for a bootable external SSD for an iMac flawed?

Folks:

My sister has a 2015 iMac. Runs the "lovely" fusion. Well, the SSD appears to have failed. Rather than open it up and risk other issues, I thought about getting her back on her feet by using an external SSD running USB 3.0. Her iMac supports 3.0 and Thunderbolt 2.

I considered just a WD Easystore 5TB portable drive. Then I started to consider that maybe such a drive wouldn't support throughput that 3.0 can take and I've heard such externals don't support TRIM.

So I am now considering this config:

Buyuing a Hannord 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure USB 3.0 to SATA III case. It supports SSD & HDD up to 4TB. Match that with a Samsung 870 QVO Seriese 2.5" 1TB SATA III V-NAND. That should let me enable TRIM support.

The question is, would this second option likely have faster speeds (read and write) than the first? It will be more expensive; I just wonder if it will have better improvement. I think this case will support TRIM; I now that drive will. Thus resulting in longer life. Just don't know if this will even make a dent in speed differences between the two.

Also, I read (in this forum) a quote by user "Athlonite" that read: "USB3 has brought a new protocol : UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) for communication with external mass storage devices over USB. The old protocol BOT (Bulk Only Transport) does not support TRIM. UASP supporting TRIM and NCQ". Option 2 should give me UASP."

I believe option 2 gives me UASP.

Thoughts?

Try looking up opening a case on Youtube. Opening a case for the first time can be a bit scary, but watching it on Youtube, you'll know, somewhat, to expect.

Another option is take it to a friend, or better a repair shop. Since its out warranty, the worse case (I love a good pun) is you'll have to buy a new PC.

WD Easystore is just a regular external HD no? You don't need trim for a regular hd isn't it?
Just buy a regular sata ssd and upgrade it yourself imo.
