Hello

I just took some time to notice and at first i thought it was psu coil whine but checking carefully i´ve noticed that my hdd is making a constant buzzing noise

I´ve checked crystal disk info and hdd sentinel and they both say the HDD is ok

Could it be some mounting issue for it to cause this constant buzzing ? it is not that loud ( have to be very close on it to hear )

But i´m not sure if i could hear this before

Is it possible for hdds to coil whine ? but i´m sure it is like a buzzing sound and i´m sure it is coming from the HDD

Thanks

When they say its ok do you mean you checked the raw values or just looked at their main status?

Please post a screenshot of crystal disk info for the drive.

Check to see if Hitachi DFT will run on it, otherwise isolate it out of the case and run it.

Backup data now while you still can.

Will post the pictures hold on

i took out the hdd case and it is properly screwed and the backplate looks fine , wondering if i´m missing something

What model is the hard drive? How old is it? Some drives are just loud.

Generally speaking weird noises are not a good sign, so backup if the data has any value to you, I am about to go bed so may miss the crystal disk info screenshot, but someone else will probably look at it anyway when you post it.

They are all DECENTLY SILENT when new, unless it's SAS server 10K+ RPM HDD.
Aging, they start to be more loud.
Yes, some "WD Green" type HDD is a little more quieter, but, even this will crackle when it has worked for like ~6-7K hours.

Without more information we can not say much about it. Did it always make this sound, or just recently. If SMART table is good it should be okay to go. HDD always make some noise, even when not used and are standby. So probably everything is good to go. Only when you hear constant clicking noise and platter speed stopping or going up and down you should worry. This mostly also reflects damage in SMART table.

Can you post screenshot of smart table for us here?

My Toshiba P300 isn't something you'll want in a cheap case on a desktop next to you...

As for the OP it's an old WD Blue (WD10EZEX), so it might be on its way out. Keep backups and make plans for replacement.

He did but the posts went poof as the servers crashed. Th SMART data looked fine at a glance, but it's an old WD Blue with like 12k hours on it, and 1200 starts I think it was. Not a lot, but no drive last forever.

Oh I missed this before, it might also just be that you notice the noise now. I thought it was like a new noise. Those old Blues aren't that loud but you can definitely hear them when they're running.

Even SSD does not last forever yes that's for sure. But if the SMART Table shows everything okay i should not worry so much about it. To be sure you could keep a spare one handy just in case...
Surely if it before never did make this sound. For the price of a good HDD nowadays it doesn't cost you a kidney. :)

I have a WD GOLD Enterprise Helium filled HDD here, it also make some noise when not using it, but it's normal. They are definitely more quiet thanks to the Helium filling, but you still can hear them working.

hey guys will upload the pictures when i get home

the site crashed yesterday and it deleted my messages

will upload soon

but can i trust the crystal disk info status 100%? i´m not sure if my hdd is ok due to the high noise

both my drives show ok in crystal disk info and hdd sentinel

Is the noise new?
i think so

i´m at a loss right now , don´t know if i should trust crystal / hdd sentinel despite the high noise coming from it

i remember loading elden ring it took like 2-3 minutes whereas it was faster before

should i run the western digital diagnostic tool maybe ?

With HDDs, best policy is: if you think something is wrong, something most likely is and its backup time EITHER WAY if you value the data. It doesn't matter what the other tools say.

could my psu cause it maybe ? it is not damaged in any way as well

thanks

I know it may sound a nuisance, but again cant answer without seeing the raw data.

Generally speaking I dont really trust a generic status reported by an app, I always look at the raw SMART data which is why I asked for it. However the raw data is still not an absolute, sometimes drives will fail when all stats are perfect, and likewise a drive could continue to function if there is some warnings. However if the raw stats do post something wrong I will very likely advise you to backup and retire the drive, but as others have said, if you unsure, start those backups right away.

I looked at the raw stats before they were lost in the crash. They looked good. That said a new noise would make me uncomfortable.

This is why I suggest the above tools in my previous post, give them a shot and see if they find faults with your drive, DFT 4.16 is older than WinDFT 0.95.

sorry for taking long

As said before, nothing to worry about. They are like Sentinel says 100 percent healthy! :)
