Is this the correct VBIOS version for my GTX 1070?

Hey there!

I figured I had better play it safe and actually ask before going ahead and possibly breaking something.

I read somewhere that there are later versions of the VBIOS for the 1070, which allows for greater stability when overclocking. I've spent a while searching the internet for the correct VBIOS for my card; I'm supposed to check out GPU-z for the manufacturer and then ensure I use theirs which is appropriate for my hardware, or brick my card, from what I understand.
Unfortunately it only comes up as PCPartner which is apparently a large OEM covering a number of subvendors including Zotac.

My machine is an acer Predator prebuild (g3-710) and it has a pretty generic-looking 1070 in it which I can't find an exact match for in the list of retail boards. A couple are similar but none identical.

The P/N is 288-1N424-100A8 but that doesn't really help narrow it down.

I've looked at the vgabios part of this website and found a few which seem like they should match, namely this one which I was going to use: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/203988/zotac-gtx1070-8192-180330

GPU-z reports "GP104 PG411 SKU 20 VGA BIOS" which matches what's listed under the BIOS internals section of that page. Am I right in assuming I can use any bios file as long as it matches that?

I also looked at this one: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/184459/zotac-gtx1070-8192-160616-1
With this one, the BIOS SKU number also matches but the frequencies are much higher than mine, would that mean I couldn't use it? Or would it just increase the base clocks?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my query!

Try overclocking via software. You brick the card you have no card.

I am overclocking via MSI Afterburner, but from what I read you get greater stability with the newer VBIOS.

That's not how it works. If you flash that bios with higher clocks and it ends up not being stable, you're SOL. Not all GPUs overclock the same.

In general flashing to overclock is not a very smart thing to do.

Yeah this is what I suspected already, thanks for confirming! Though what I was really wondering was how to identify the correct update for my card based on the info I have available.

This was the reddit article I was referring to by the way:
Apparently cards with Micron RAM benefit from an update.

One had issues with a small memory overclock, most of the rest look like they don't know what they're doing with another losing performance.

Not worth it.

I appreciate your input :)

Do you happen to know the answer to my question?

Nope. It might work, it might not. I value my hardware enough to not play with vbios'.

I would undervolt it, with a little OC. I had a 1070Ti that undervolted great and it dropped the power consumption down from about 180W to 130W. I bet you can get that card to run at the same performance with at least 30W less power usage and lower noise from that blower cooler.

Please don't break your GPU trying random vbios not meant for it. Stick with what you can get out of MSi Afterburner and be happy with it.

You should really know what you are doing before you start messing round with unmatched vbios, and have backup for when you break it.
