ok..well somehow my hard drive gotta virus on it..i tried scaning my computer with everything it just wouldnt allow me to delete it..so i am gonna buy a new hard drive. just a few questions

do all motherboards support SATA hard drives?

my hard drive model : ST3160021A
mobo model : 939AGP-P

... safe-mode...

No all motherboards do not support Sata hard drives, but your does. No need for you to buy a new HHD, Just go here

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/discwiz.html

Download the Discwizard Starter edition to the desktop, get two unused floppy discs and then click on the Seagate Icon on your desktop and it will put all that on to the two floppies.

Then put the first one back in the floppie drive, reboot and you need to write Zeros or do a "Zero Fill" to your hard drive. This will completely erase everything. Use the same Discwizard to setup your hard drive for re-installing everything.

You might first try using system tools in the Accesories section of Win XP, Start/ all programs/ accesoies/ System tools / disc cleanup / ...... then defrag try you antivirus again

bit drastic but if u format the old one it will get rid of it.. if u dont have much on your system it aint that drastic.. it would be for me thow..

And as the stelthfighter mentioned try that from the safe mode (Push F8 as the machine posts)

Simple formatting might not get rid of the underlying virus. Format merely deletes the directory, that might not be good enough.

It does take several hours, but it will positively get the virus.

Format and do a fresh install.

A full format, not the silly quick format, will completely erase the hard drive. Period.

the only reason u cant delete any file from windows virus or otherwise is cos its in use.. find a way to stop it being loaded at start up then kill the bloody thing..

out of curiosity what virus is it anyways.. ??

trog

Safe mode only loads the basic drivers and such needed to start windows. Therefore the virus would not load/be in use therefore you can delete it.

If a file is flagged as a neccessary windows file (which it can be, from what I've heard) it can't be deleted in safe mode until you get that flag off it. I forget how the guy did it or how I came across the article, but that can be used for viruses to stay undetected.

Not much difference between a full format and a quick format. A Low level format is another name for zero fill. Since the Drive is made of 1s and 0s, if you completely write zeros to the drive or by other names (zero fill) (Low Level Format) then you have eliminated the data. So if the Royal Canadian Mounted Police come knocking on your weird neighbors door and he is laughing that he just formatted his drive. They may well be able to pull the "Kiddie Porn" off his drive.

You can tell me I'm wrong about the neighbor, but I still think I'm right about the drive. :)
