Right, Im in a bit of a pickle :(

I currently own this 1366 x 768 40" LCD TV - Samsung LE40A455C1. Its about 8 months old and I paid £427 for it (a major f*ck up on the Bennetts site enabled this, as it was meant to be £699.99 at the time :rockout: )

BUT!

Ive been offered £400 cash for it which would mean I could get a FULL HD (1080p) TV instead (obviously after putting a few quid towards it)

The TV I would get to replace my 'old' one would be this:

1920 x 1080 42" LCD TV - LG 42LG5000 (£587.98).

What should I do

The Samsung is a superb TV, but only 'HD Ready'

Whereas the LG is 'Full HD' and has better contrast ratios etc.....

Heres the stats for both TVs on Reevoo:

Samsung: http://www.reevoo.com/reviews/mpn/samsung/le40a455c1

LG: http://www.reevoo.com/reviews/mpn/flat_tv_company_ltd/42lg5000

The TV is mainly used for SKY+ (not HD), XBOX360, Blu-ray and occasional laptop use via VGA.

PS:

Samsung contrast ratio - 10000:1
LG contrast ratio - 50000:1

Samsung resolution - 1366 x 768
LG resolution - 1920 x 1080

Samsung screen size - 40"
LG resolution - 42"

Samsung reflection angle - 178
LG reflection angle - 176 (admittedly better on the Sammy but not too much difference tbh)

Samsung response time - 6ms
LG response time - 5ms

get the 1080p FullHD, much easier to get working with PCs

Dude go for the LG. My buddy has a 62" and that thing is flat out sick!!! I think you'll be happy going with full HD in the long run anyway :)

Cool, thats what I wanted to hear :rockout:

Ive been wanting a 1080p TV since my m8 upgraded to one :D

You'll love it!! Do you have a blue ray player?

one of my buddies got a sony full hd lcd tv of 42"....it plays all games awesome...cost was around like 62000 INR i.e 1250$...and it supports all interfaces like vga...dvi,hdmi,and all those..

Yeah m8, the Samsung BDP1500 ;) It looks very good on my Samsung 720p TV, but Im sure it will look even better on a 1080p TV :rockout:

Ive also got the HD-DVD addon for my 360, so that should be better also on a Full HD TV.

Ohh yeah you will be sitting pretty for sure. Enjoy take some pics when you get it all set up

No doubt, hands down grab the LG. LG has come along way in making LCDs and Plasmas. I own a 50" 720P (got it for like 899.99 from HHGregg because a customer said it was too big for their wall, it was originally 1599.99) and that thing is gorgeous. Sure, 1080p would be better, but hard to tell a major difference unless you have a ps3 hooked up or another bluray player.

I will m8, thanks for the info ;)

My current Sammy looks pretty sweet cos its white lol....but the black LG should look awesome :)

Thanks m8 ;)

Another concern I had was that the LG was only 50Hz like my Samsung....do you think its worth shelling out more cash for a 100Hz model? (tbh I dont want to have to spend too much cash on this upgrade :( )

Ive got a 42" LG plasma myself not full hd but a great set. Excellent build and easy to use.

And if you can get one with minimum 100 hz then go for it i say minimum cus they got 200 hz models now.

For me to get a 100Hz TV it would be an extra £100 (making the TV £699) and it would be a 40" Samsung like my current TV.

I was trying to 'upgrade' for as little as possible :( But I do understand that 100Hz would be better than 50Hz for standard definition TV veiwing :)

PS: Ive heard some bad things about the new 200Hz SONY LCD TV's (the 200Hz makes the movement unnatural....the guy in the electrical store said it made everyone look like they had Parkinsons's Disease :( )

i have a 40" samsung (768p like yours) and my brother has a 42" LCD (not sure if its the same model as the one you're looking at)

When i saw his TV, it did look a bit better than my samsung... the only downer here for you is that 1080P is going to take a beefier video card if you game on it :)

Did I miss hs spec's what card does he/op you have?

It depends on the brand and make i think some do it better then others (200hz)

Thanx, but the only 'gaming' I will do on it will be with the XBOX360 ;)

The Laptop Im using has built in Intel GFX and I only connect it to the TV to watch the occasional x264 movie ;)

Very true m8............but you would think that a SONY would be pretty good :(

TBH Sony have lost a lot of credibility over the years when it comes to electrical goods :( (ie they used to be the top brand)

You have a blue ray player to compliment that and built in hd tuner?

then go for it.

You said it yourself - you arent paying very much here, and neither are you going for "just" a resolution upgrade, its also bigger and has better specs (contrast, probably others)

Just check to make sure the LG doesnt have an inferior viewing angle, and you're all set.

I'd be all over that LG cause that's a damn good price for a awesome upgrade. Does your Xbox 360 have the HDMI output?

I have a Blu-ray player, XBOX360 (with HDMI), HD-DVD addon (for the 360), but I only have SKY+ (UK satellite TV) @ standed definition.

Yep, HDMI Elite :rockout:

then go for it.

Yep, the specs on the LG seem quite a bit better:

Samsung contrast ratio - 10000:1
LG contrast ratio - 50000:1

Samsung resolution - 1366 x 768
LG resolution - 1920 x 1080

Samsung screen size - 40"

Samsung response time - 6ms

One the best bits with my set is that i just have to press input button then scroll accross to hdmi or component antenna ect instead of repeatedly pressing the button so much easier. :D

I hate having to keep pressing 'source' to get to the next channel lol

I also forgot:

LG response time - 5ms
