Hi guys, I have received an RTX 4060 MXM-A from X-VSION and it doesn't want to run on my Dell Precision M4800 and I suspect that VBIOS could be an issue. Would someone here have a VBIOS for a similar 4060 MXM-A? Or maybe even a Quadro RTX 2000 VBIOS. Both would be great.

I wanted to try this upgrade too! It's sad no one it's answering you on any forum :-(
Guys!! It's an important matter: an M4800 with a RTX4060 it's the everyone's dream!!

Today's laptops are not MXM anymore, they are all thin and light or soldered to the motherboard. The days of MXM are long gone, its a niche market within a niche product.

Of course, but I am not switching to any other laptop, my M4800 will stay, I just need to make that 4060 work and that's it. This doesn't help.

"I just need to make that 4060 work and that's it".

It won't. The only supported cards on that model are those on Dell's list, some Firepro and 2 Quadro's, all from Dell (coded into motherboard AND MXM itself), not third party.

So yeah, no 4060 ever in that laptop.

This doesn't help either, I know, but it is what it is.

From what firmware editing knowledge do you know it can't and won't work?

From my times servicing Dell's, from laptops to servers.

I have Quadro T1000 installed in it so NO, it is not restricted.
4060 probably has some kind of software conflict (my bet is that it is either BIOS or EC)

Looking at the different cards, it appears that the laptop was originally only designed for 55W TDP for the graphics card. The 4060 you have is a 110W TDP card.

Do you have the higher spec'd power supply for this? Is the cooling system capable of handling double the load it was designed for? Did you have to get a modified heatsink?

I ask all these questions because at one point I did have a Clevo WU860 and I went from the GTX 460m to the 6970M and lastly the 7990M. Each needed to have a higher power supply to work, and I also needed to get modified heatsinks from Eurocom to match the new cards. YMMV but at one point, Dell and Clevo MXM modules shared vBIOS and were compatible with one another.

There are only two verified vBIOS for the 4060 Mobile in the database, Clevo and MSI. There are several others in the unverified section, both Dell and Clevo. One of the three below may be what you need. Though YMMV and could end up bricking the card.

the consumption of the gpu can be limited from the driver in windows and in linux too, so that's not such a problem

I have a very overkill 330W PSU and my heatsink is modified already to accommodate higher TDP GPUs, I also wouldn't run 4060 at full 110W, nah, it will not do any good for that old battery too.

I have tried countless VBIOSes, even ones from RTX 2000 Ada Lovelace, but that didn't change anything really.

If the Dell ones aren’t working, then that card could very well not be compatible with that system without some heavy modification.

That’s why I had to stop upgrading my WU860. The newer GPUs weren’t compatible and it was never made to support anything more than 2 generations after release which for a laptop is good.

Considering that laptop is about 10 years old or so, if you’ve gotten the types of upgrades out of it until the recent generation, that’s awesome.

Todays mobiles arent worth trying, that trend started like 15 years ago. Time they move on.

I will still try!
I love this machine and it helped me during the rough times. Even at this point I can play Cyberpunk without much issues, the biggest upgrade yet was probably the 4980HQ mutant CPU. I also have to find a 2230 NVME SSD with out breaking the bank.

You can use an expresscard->m.2 adapter to get a faster m.2 drive. The adapter it's €17 on aliexpress. You'll be able to use m.2 2242 nvme drives that are easier to be found, a bit cheaper and you'll be able to find first brand devices for cheap. It will go at 400MB/s
It can be used as boot device with chainload methods, they work but why not to use the sata3 2,5" slot that goes at 600MB/s as boot device?
The other slots are
M.2 msata that uses sata2 and goes at 285MB/s
DVD caddy that goes at sata2 speed
I have a i7-4800MQ why was the i7-4980HQ your biggest upgrade?

I will still try!

For the 4060 have you tried submitting your acpi table to chatgpt to edit the DSDT/SSDT? Maybe you could ask directly to insanelymac, r/acpi or winraid-forum
I assume you are the same user on the other forums xD

I'm sure you can find a 10th gen intel or Ryzen that would be a huge upgrade over that unit for a decent price over a mxm card that could get bricked or mobo bios does.

@eidairaman1 we all know that. But the fact are it still can run modern games and it could be a great portable gaming device for an extremely cheap price. Yes, there are steamdecks and other cheap laptops but we have and love this one

In fact i just asked to chatgpt to create a modern DSDT table form the one i extracted from mine M4800 and it seemed reasonably good. It said the table it's missing power state functions like:

_STA (to declare the active state of the device)
_INI (for specific initializations)
_PS0/_PS3 (power state management)
_DSM (Device Specific Method, required for correct enumeration of many Nvidia GPUs)

it added them in the code and it seemed feasable. I am not sharing it because it's a very alpha test, but it seems not so bad.
So maybe we will be able to use modern gpus on this system...

Are you H3ADROOM over winraid-forum? Do have i already written to you? :D @MELOCODI

Nah, I wouldn't use an expresscard, it is too slow, I have installed a mPCIe to M.2 NVME adapter instead, it should be a lot faster, I will get that 2230 NVME SSD one day, preferably Gen 3.

4980HQ has a huge 128 MB L4 cache, much better iGPU and faster base & boost clocks.

I tried to tinker with DSDT/SSDT for a long time but didn't get much success, I used GitHub Copilot and Pieces Desktop to get some hand from AI, it didn't help much really, closest I've got to make it work is a "ACPI_BIOS_ERROR" BSOD when I try to boot with 4060 inserted, T1000 works fine with it.

Shouldn't it be something like this?
Slot/InterfaceRaw theoretical bandwidthActual usable bandwidth
2.5″ bay (internal SATA3)6.0Gbps → 600MB/sup to 550MB/s
mSATA slot (SATA2)3.0Gbps → 300MB/s~260MB/s
DVD caddy (SATA2)3.0Gbps → 300MB/s~260MB/s
ExpressCard→NVMe (PCIe2.0x1)5.0Gbps → ~500MB/s~400MB/s

Would you like to compare your DSDT with the one o created with chatgpt4o? maybe it improved and we could find the problem

That mPCIe slot is 3.0, I think, eh, you can send that DSDT table of course, I am not sure if that would help

Yep!

Yep!
Oh I was hoping the Web was full of people trying to install a 4060 mxm on this lovely metallic brick :D
