I have been looking at a few boards but unsure how to pick. any suggestions would be great help.

A HTPC/General home use computer does need to be all that powerful.

I'd look at something like an AsRock DeskMini, then build around that.

Go big or go home & play with your xxx (insert your preferred device here) :)

Suggest you use pcpartspicker.com as a starting point (filtered by price 1st), then read some reviews on various boards that you think may fit your needs.

Most mini ITX boards should accommodate the low-mid requirements of an HTPC..

need a budget...you could build a htpc out of a dirt cheap laptop and call it a day or go full out and build a proper gaming htpc that has a fancy case...also any reasons going for an htpc over an nvidia shield or amazon fire/roku type device?

Look for a R5 2400G and pair it with a B 450 board of your choice. Get 16GB of 3200MHZ Ram from the QVL list of the MB. Add a DVD bluray player and you should be good to go. If you need a PSU anything from the 400W to 550W range from EVGA, Silverstone or Corsair would be good. Get a small 120-240 GB SSD for WIndows and get a nice 2 TB SSHD for storage. If you don't have a case something like the Cooler Master HAFXB would be good for stereo cabinets.
