Hello,

My friend just bought a 9600GT and he managed to rip a capacitor off the card. Would it still work without it? He's afraid to blow up his computer, when running the card. I'm guessing it will not be stable under 3DMark in case it works.
I included a picture of the location of the capacitor that was ripped off, it's on the VRM part, far right.

it probably won't work right or it will get damaged more,
solder it back on.

It either won't go or will go but not properly.
Seriously doubt the PC will blowup or suffer permanent damage.
Glue it back on acarefully and RMA it.

That cap looks pretty easy to solder back on. check mouser.com if they stock that cap and get a 20watt iron from a local hardware store.

Glue it back on acarefully and RMA it.

hehe

Thanks for your answers! My friend brought it back to the shop. The shop said it booted fine, they are going to test it with 3D Mark. He didn't talk about the missing cap because he was afraid that the shop wouldn't accept the card, because of inproper handling, cuz it's my friend's fault.

they wont tell him to rep[air it...that cap regulates voltage by the looks of it their is one or 2 for ever VRM in which case under heavy load it wont be stable or the voltage will fluctuate because it isnt their shortening the cards lifespan..id solder it back on

Now the shop has the card. I dont' know what will happen. I'll update as soon as possible.

i had a 7800GT ,and the caps were very close to the bottom of the card,so close i managed to rip 1 off when taking the card out to clean the Fan.

but it didnt appear to do anything ,ive since given the card to a m8 who has it in daily use playing games etc for over a year since i broke the cap/
i did a bit or research on the cap ,and it seems it was pretty common prob with it coming off being that close to the pci-e slot, the cap itself was i think something to do with voltage regualtion from wat i can gather.
either way it doesnt appear to have suffered performance or stabiltiy wise from it breaking off.

tsk, tsk...

It's likely your friend will get the same card back. Missing cap doesn't affect the card in any way that they would detect it in the shop. Btw, if he didn't mention the missing cap then what did he say when he RMA'd it?

"You brake it, you pay it."
