Monitor going black while PC stilll running

Hello, this problem came when i try playing heavy games on my PC when i play like for 5 hours the Monitor loses Signal and the PC, mouse and keyboard are still running, i tried cleaning the PC and it still crashed so i came looking for help on site

My Specs:

CPU: I5 4590
GPU: MSI Radeon RX 480
RAM: 12gb
Disk: 1tb
SSD disk: 112gb
PSU 650 watt
2 cooling fans 1 is 140mm at the back and 120mm in the front
Motherboard: Gigabyte B85M-HD3

Please help me

BTW when i run a game the cpu is kept at 60°C

You need isolate the problem to either the computer or the monitor.

But first, make sure the monitor cables are securely fastened. If they are then you need to swap monitors with another machine to see if the problem moves to the 2nd computer with the old monitor (indicating the monitor is at fault), or if the problem stays with the 1st computer (indicating the problem is in the computer).

If you don't have a 2nd monitor to try, most TVs support computer input.

Well most likely is either your monitor or your GPU as @Bill_Bright said above you need to figure and isolate your problem first....so If you have other GPU or other monitor/TV try that and inform us what happens....GL

Monitor is old Samsung SyncMaster E2220

What specific RX480 are you using?(MSI is not detailed enough), get a GPU-Z screenshot and a white sticker pic from the card back or near pcie edge

Did you buy the card new or used?
What drivers are you running?

Have you updated your motherboard chipset drivers?

Have you swapped monitor cables or tried a different video input?

I asked if the card was new or used, I take it was used, your psu gives me no confidence, take pictures of the card labels and power supply label please, gpu-z screenshot please.

I had a samsung sync master monitor for 7-8 years (don't recall the exact model any more) and it started doing something similar. Monitor would just go black.... I'd have to power it off and back on and if that didn't work I'd have to power cycle my computer and power the monitor of and on again.

Problem ended up being bad capacitors on the power board. I found a company on amazon that sold the necessary capacitors for my monitor. I spent about $15 and 2 hours pulling the monitor apart, removing the 7 bad (4 were visibly bulging) caps and soldering the new 7 caps.

I did that work on the monitor about 4 years ago and gave it to my younger brother and he's still using it to this day.

So, something to keep in mind.

My NEC monitor in 2017 exhibited this same behavior, the monitor is from 2001, unsure if its backlight, brick or the powerboard you mention for samsung...

1. Provide systems specs ... make, specific model number of all componenets

2. Provide GPU Temps and spefically what is running at the time problem occurs.

3. Provide any Event Viewer messages in System Log

4. 6-pn MSI 480-pin or 8-pin. If 6-pin, Id start there

5. Sswapping power and signal cabples and swapping minitors is a great step in eliminating possibilities

"Still does the same" - what does that mean? Does the monitor go black when you are not gaming (i.e. when web browsing or doing other desktop work), or only when gaming?

You need to pinpoint the issue, seeing as you are using a AMD gpu it most likely is the driver crashing and causing the screen to go to sleep which means the gpu driver crashed and did not recover.

Reinstall driver for gpu first
1. Download DDU uninstaller
2. Remove all previous driver version via DDU uninstaller
3. Reinstall latest gpu driver from AMD's website.

If the issue persists than it could also be the HDMI, or DVI, or whatever input you are using to the monitor, Check the cable leads on both ends, Replace cables and see if the issue persists and if it still happens, try to use a different monitor and see if the issue goes away.

AMD drivers tend to be buggy, AMD makes great CPU's but their gpu drivers are not always 100 percent stable.

Also check Event viewer and click on warnings and see if their is a GPU crash report if their is a report stating driver crashed then you know it was the driver

If the monitor goes to sleep only after 5 hours than 9 times out of 10 it's probably NOT the Monitor, my best guess would be the HDMI port on the graphics card or DVI port or whatever your using for input is going bad. Try switching to another port and see if the problem goes away.

Seeing as you are currently using a AMD gpu i hate to say it but AMD's drivers have a tendency to break themselves, try removing the current driver via DDU uninstaller and reinstall the latest drivers. AMD has a history of releasing broken drivers and this no hate towards them as they make fantastic CPU's, just their drivers are not the greatest.

Okay, so it only happens when you alt-tab out of the game? Or can it also happen if you're just playing? Are you playing in fullscreen or borderless windowed fullscreen mode? If the former, try the latter (as it makes it much easier to switch in and out of the game). Regardless, that does indeed make it sound like a driver issue. Might be the driver itself or it might be your game(s) not handling the switch to the desktop properly and thus crashing the driver. Regardless, a DDU reinstall is a good starting point.

Then as I said way up in post #2, try a TV then. All this other talk is wasting time. You need to determine if the problem is in your monitor, or your computer. And the ONLY way to do that is to try a different monitor (or TV) on this computer.

He was responding to the poster who implied your problems were due to the fact you have an AMD graphics card. That just is not true. NVIDIA cards can just as easily have driver, GPU crashing, and sleep issues too.

Yup, yesterday i told someone to rma their rtx 2000 series gpu due to it causing a a crash with a gpu light to occur multiple times on their mobo, not to mention several with rtx 2000 series cards the fans reving up and down in a endless cycle.
