i just bought a pre-built win 11 PC with 3070 card..

it came with win 11 installed.. i cant get it to recognize my fancy asus PG279Q monitor.. it thinks its s 60 hrz TV and has installed a generic driver..

i have done all the update driver stuff and even uninstalled the driver but it keeps coming up with the generic driver..

i reinstalled the nvidia drivers but that didnt help.. the system works but i have no g sync and only 60 hrz.. the option to crank up g-sync dosnt show up in the nvidia control panel..

how the f-ck do i get windows to recognize the monitor i have and stop thinking its a bloody 60 hrz TV. .. he he

Tips I can think of:
Monitor drivers often comes via Windows update, although some generic should work. But you can try find the driver for your LCD and install it manually.
Also if you have possibility to connect it via another cable/port, if you have DP try HDMI or vice-versa.

Also been long I had to do this, but you can create custom resolution with desired refresh rate, but ofc won't help with the G-sync.
My best bet is still finding and installing the correct driver for the LCD manually.

I'm on W10 still and have the exact issue with my AOC monitor, it only has the generic driver now too.
Nvidia GPU user also.
I've tried to "fix" it but can't find a solution so I basically gave up, if you find a solution I would love to know.

@Caring1 Have you tried checking with Windows Update > optional/drivers updates and then try to manually search the driver for your model?

I remember having this problem a while back but I cannot recall the exact solution in my case. I did however notice at some point, for some reason. My GPU was not recognized as my RTX 3070, instead it had reverted to "Microsoft basic display adapter" for some reason. I noticed that in the menus/GPU-Z if i recall. Although solving that didn't solve the issue if I remember.
I also fuffed around with different cables and outputs on the GPU but I did get it to work again at some point. But I do remember a lot of reinstallation of the Nvidia drivers, plenty of DDU and digging through my box of cables more than once. And went through the good old "wiggle wiggle wiggle, yeah" with all cables. Internally and externally.

As I said, I cannot recall what I did to finally fix it, but I remember parts of that, at least.

Just to be clear Trog, have you forced the Asus driver to update through device manager using the "manual" option?

This is what my device manager shows.

this got a bit complicated.. i manged to find a monitor driver and managed to install it into windows via the browse for a driver option.. windows now shows the correct monitor but the fancy asus monitor was still stuck at 60 hrz with no g-sync or other options showing up in the control panel..

i was using the htmi connection and not the display port.. it seems to do its stuff the asus monitor needs a display port connection none of the fancy stuff is available with a htmi connection..

here is where it gets silly.. this new PC has a problem.. there is a ledge on the back of the case.. the graphics card sockets are too close to this ledge.. there is not enough clearance to accommodate the plastic plug casing.. the less thick htmi plug goes in but the thicker display port plug dosnt go fully in.. it seems to but it dosnt.. this is why i was using the htmi connection..

its taken a few hours of my time figuring this out and a bit of head scratching.. anyways out comes the power file and i remove a chunk of plastic off the back of the display port plug.. it now goes in fully until it clicks..

my monitor now does what it should do.. i have told the PC sellers about this "problem" and am waiting to hear what they say about it.. it aint something that should happen.. the machine should really go back but i will keep it.. i cant be arsed to f-ck about sending it back..

i am running two machines into one monitor.. one (my normal machine) is running nicehash mining software.. this software f-cks about with the nvidia drivers it stops any other 3D application from running in 3D mode.. i cant just switch off the miner and play a game.. i want to play games so i bought the new PC just to game on.. kind of weird but it seems the only way i can mine and play games..

the mining machine now runs off the htmi connection and the gaming machine runs off the display port.. i just switch inputs.. the monitor lets me do this.. but i need the new gaming machine on the display port input.. the mining machine is fine on the htmi input..

I was able to achieve 120Hz with my HP 25X monitor with a HDMI connection, on my Dell i5 3847 PC and my AMD Radeon 7700 series card. If my video card had a dport option, I would surely be using the dport and cable, because I have another PC thats basically the same, that I use the dport option with, and it's makes a lot of difference in the speed, probably because it gives me higher resolutions. IMO, dport is the way to go, my HP 25X has the dport option, but I don't game, so I'm not going to spend $$$$ to get another video card and cable for a PC I only normally only surf the web with.

it could just be my asus monitor thats peculiar.. but with an htmi connection all it gives me is 60 hrz with no g-stnc or other options.. they just dont show up in the nvidia control panel.. whether or not this is normal i dont know.. i have been using the monitor for quiet a while.. not working properly with an htmi connection is all new to me..

the new machine has some "if removed the warranty is void" stickers on the back.. but it needs a better cooler so i am going to have to take it apart.. while i am at it i will investigate why there isnt enough clearance for the graphics card plugs.. a bit of a mystery that one.. he he..
