Hi guys and gals..

I'm wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction for this...
At the very end of August last year, I managed to buy one very special Gigabyte X58A-OC motherboard, I had it through and all looked in great condition but sadly not having sorted out a spare PSU to test the board with, I have just had it laying in its box... Until a little earlier on yesterday...
When I found the board wouldn't post, I was somewhat frustrated but also wondering, what the heck would it it.. When I dismantled my test bed, took out the CPU, I found out what was causing the problem...

No wonder it wasn't posting...

Now with some amount of luck, I had managed to get it posting but sadly not all of the memory slots where being recognised and such, so with more tickering, I have in fact made the board sadly even worse.. Or as it was when I got it (so I'm guessing worse..??)
Anyways, I'm guessing that if I could find someone or somewhere that might be able to swap out the socket of this amazing board, it might live again?? Can this even be done?? If so, what do I need to get this done??

I'm gutted I never tested this sooner or even checked the CPU socket when I had received it through as it would have gone back to the seller without a shadow of doubt...
Can anyone help me rescue this lovely motherboard or is it now a £160 paperweight?? I look forward to hearing from you :)

I've done worse, see my sig.

Sadly, I'll be no help and tell you I just had to replace my board and accept my dumbass actions.

At least this time around, you didn't do the initial damage.

Was the CPU in the board when you bought it?
If not, how could you not see that when placing your CPU in the socket?

Gigabyte use to replace sockets for $50 but no longer do. You could try to ask them though

Use a magnifying glass and reading glasses. Fix it

@stinger608 may have had this done to one of his a few years back... maybe he'll notice the tag and offer his experience.
If I recall, they ended up sending me a new board.........Man, that's been so long ago I can't remember what exactly happened...............Damn old age.

the last time i personally dealt w/ a manufacturer doing in depth repairs (such as a socket replacement) was sometime around 2008-2010 iirc. I cant be 100% certain of the date, but i recall the situation i dealt with it. My buddy , (against my advice) bought ~what was supposed to be a BNIB~ Asrock Z68 Extreme 3 off Ebay, in reality it was TFIB (totally F@cked in Box). It looked like a Tiny fat kid had sat down on the Socket pins, most of them were laying down like the trees in Tunguska. I went through the obligatory "i told You so's" , and then the "Manufacturers dont warranty items off Ebay , for this exact reason", but decided i'd try. They agreed to take it, but wanted $50 + any shipping charges, he paid them, and they fixed the board. I would think that type of repair would be pretty pricey, I'd have guessed they would just send another board, but as far as i can tell, they actually fixed it. I marked the board prior to shipping it, and the one that came back had the same markings. Great service option, its too bad if they truly no longer do it.

The pic does not look that bad, actually. There seems to be no broken pins (just a few folded ones), which means it may not need a socket replacement in order to be fixed - just some manual labor with a needle and tweezers.
Otherwise, look for a decent electronics repair shop which offers BGA rework. If they have an infrared rework station, they can fix it for you.

Now this kind of stuff is third-party only. But as far as I know (or I'd charge for this kind of repair), it's no less than $40 for socket replacements in my area (more for 2011/2011-3, 'cause it's much more difficult).

I emailed Gigabyte on a board I got and they refused.

Sadly yes and I didn't take it out of the socket to check it when I was taking pictures of the board etc..

I'll see if I can get hold of Gigabyte and see if they can suggest anyone or if they will do it themselves... So very frustrated by this.. :(

Again, I contacted Gigabyte and they refused to do it. Even if you provide the sockets and everything they won't do it. There is a third party that'll do it for $100, just Google it.

You need a re-work station to solder in a new socket, ie you need pre-heater & a secondary heat source from the top.

I'm over in the UK so I'm hoping that there might be someone based over here that can do it.. I'll check with a mate of mine and see if he knows anything, it'll be great to get it up and running.. Even when I did get it working not all of the memory slots were working so it wasn't working 100% at all...

Thanks for the help guys, I'll see what I can find out and post back :)

Certainly worth a shot. Good luck bud:toast:

@phill

Man now you freaked me out.

On 04.03.2018 i have bought a X58 Motherboard + CPU and the CPU came in the board and i haven't taken it out since the day it was delivered ( almost two months ago ):twitch:

I was far worse than that @Knoxx29, I bought the Gigabyte board back in August 2017, until yesterday I never looked at the socket.. My mistake sadly... :(

At least i have the Ebay Buyer Protection which is valid 180 days, that said i am still on time if something is wrong.

I think it might be past that but where there be anywhere I could check??

You got it on August 2017 that is 9 months ago and 180 days are 6 months so i dont see Ebay or Paypal could help you.

Unfortunately you ran out of luck.

I will drop the seller a little email and say to him.. Not that I expect a reply but you never know. That said I'm fully prepared to pay to get it repaired and working :)

Over tightening the CPU cooler can affect the traces to the DIMM slots to the extent some may stop functioning, or it may be that some pins relate to the memory.

It's definitely worth getting it repaired since there are not too many left that work. At least it's just the socket though, my X58A-OC needs a new Northbridge which is much more of a pain to change.

I would agree with that but since the cooler was just sat on the top of the CPU, sadly this isn't the case. When I had it working it was detecting 2 out of the 3 slots I had ram plugged in, so I made it worse but I did see that a few pins are missing I think, I wish I could do something...

If your X58A-OC needs a north bridge, would you like mine as a donor as it's just the socket? :)

EDIT - Well I've been a very bad person and done something very bad... oops....
