this is really confusing me
i got my motherbaord to work. i ran a system recovery from my emachine and i got to the desktop.
a lot of the hardware didn't work because the computer was puting hardware that was on my emachine on the new motherbaord. windows is not activated and will not work in 30 days.

i tried putting the asus driver disk in the cd rom and the computer is not reading the cd rom. when i go to explore from the start button theres no f drive or what ever that is called.

what should i do. i dont know what the problem is its driving me crazy.

plz reply as soon as possible.

buy (there are other ways) another copy of windows.. the official ms policy is.. the mobo is the PC.. your oem license just cover the PC it came installed on..

download some mobo drivers off the net.. that way u dont need the cd at first.. one good thing about via boards.. the via 4 in 1s are easy to find.. once u install the correct drivers the cd should show up.. u could back up your important data somehow to another partition or drive.. then reinstall windows to your boot up drive from a proper install cd..

the repair disk u got with your machine is no longer of much use to u.. its just a snapshot of how it was when u first bought it.. pretty useless from the word go to be honest..

what you will want to do is Format(clean install of windows) from the win xp cd and then when the screen comes up to register u hit the register by phone call up MS and tell them that you updated your machine and need to reactivate and that thats the only system your using that copy of windows with and you should be up and running with all your hardware installed on that machine only :toast:

thats what u do if u have a real copy of windpws.. when u use the restore piece of junk that come with most oem machines it dosnt work that way.. plus he only has the oem license which dosnt allow the change of mobo.. what u do it seems is tell em the old one died on u and its just a repair they might reactivate it then..

if he buys a new copy of windows the activation problem goes away.. its all new and dosnt matter..

haha...micrsostuffit

i went through 2 mobos on the same pc and the same copy of windows and thery gave a new activation code no problem.same as my hd's.did a fresh install and got it reactivated no prob.

its sposed to be okay with the proper copy of widows.. but the oem license is just for the machine it came with.. u change the mobo they consider it to be a different machine.. however it seems they will accept a replacement mobo if u tell em the other one died..

im pretty sure theres only 2 kinds of windows xp keys the full version key and the upgrade key so if he gets his hands on a win xp full cd and uses the cd key that should be stickered on his e-machines he should be able to do what i told him to do. I dont think they ask if its a oem version or not i have changed my system alot and have prolly had to call in like 10 times to reactivate mine since i bought my xp upgrade o so many years ago and i have never had a problem they only care that its only installed on one machine at a time as far as i know :)

volume license key, allows install of windows XP pro without having to activate it afterwards, only given to large costumers so they dont have to install large numbers of windows machines and then spend a week activating a couple of hundred machines.
