I've got an "old" MSI GT70 2PC with nVidia 870M and I want to upgrade to 980M. I've seen it's a possible upgrade for this ind of laptops.
Is it possible to do it?
Do I need a new modificated vBios?

Thanks a lot!!!

Seen where? typically GPU BIOS is tied into the system BIOS on a laptop and rarely can you upgrade them, not that it would make much difference anyway as they are both old so 20% faster 980m is still going to pale in comparison of anything relatively modern, save up for a laptop or desktop upgrade to something within the last couple of years, you won't get much more out of such an old system regardless if you could find a 980m and manage to mod the system bios to accept it which I highly doubt you can

It's not something i would do to my daily driver, but yeah, it is possible.

Get the card, swap it out, and see if it works. If it does not, yes, you will have to mod the bios.

I tend to agree with Marcus that it isn't worth the time and trouble, but yeah, totally possible.

It isn't worth it, don't bother.

There exist kits on Ebay for this

but it's entirely an academic exercise, the jump from a 970m to a 980m isnt that big, both are quite outdated by modern standards and for that price, just invest it in a newer PC. Even a mobile 4060 would crush that thing.

For learning purposes sure go ahead, is it worth it? Not so and there is a possibility that it might not play well with the motherboard

There was an old laptop forums that was shut down about 2yrs ago. Those forums had tons of info on upgrading a laptop gpu like this, but sadly that info was deleted when the forums were deleted.
