Hi,
Plus expensive at a silly 500.us +

It could be like F1 tires: if you don't warm it up enough, it can't give you full performance :p
Or perhaps if you don't hold it right, you won't get the full performance, hehehehe

Sorry, I couldn't resist :D

The elephant in the room. Gen 5 just isn't worth it.

I find the optimal spot to be a high-end Gen 3 drive with quality NAND and DRAM cache. Gen 4's alright, if the price isn't much higher. But the experience is indistinguishable between them.

I only see a drive such as this mattering if a lot of data is involved, and honestly, at capacities well beyond 4 TB. This sucks, SSD capacity is stuck in the 1 to 8 TB limbo for how long now? Over 5 years? SSDs should have matched or eclipsed most HDDs in capacity by now, with the exception of the latest generation 18-20TB+ He-filled drives.

Couldn't care less about this drive, insane power, insane cooler size, poot price, but I'm intrigued by that Neo Forza 4TB drive. Seems to be pretty good all round, price, power etc. Any body had experience with them?

lol, that heatsink is farcical. I sure hope that PCIe 4.0 drives stick around for a long time, because 5.0 looks more and more like a bad joke. A near-unanimous majority of the consumer market won't even notice a speed increase; that is the reward for strapping this grotesque monstrosity onto your motherboard. Imagine slotting two or three drives, lmao.
Also that these gen5 drives end up consuming 7200rpm spindle levels of power as well. Completely away from the original efficiency of nand storage.

Hi,
Might want to add a kick stand on it as well before to rips the m.2 socket off the board hehe

Well this type of heatsink is beyond overkill and into wtf territory lol
It will be a matter of time before that happens to someone.

The mounting mechanism is too fragile to house such chunky coolers.

I wish the bittorrent testing included making a torrent file from a folder that was 100 GB in size.
I have a SN850X and it takes awhile to make a torrent file from a 600 GB folder with 8 MB piece size.

I thought about it and felt that was a pretty niche activity for the vast majority of users. Setting up new testbench for 2024, and could certainly add it, so convince me ;)

They get the job done (much) faster, so less power overall. But yeah, it seems we're trying hard to get back where we were.

THanK yOu MSI I am so grateful for one more kg of heat sink bearing down on my motherboard. I will take 3 of these.

Jokes aside, I'm skipping anything M.2 that requires active cooling for the time being.
Agreed. As stated before the N.2 format is too damned hot and I will not put one in my rig. I'll have one externally but right now... NOPE. Becasue of the heat issues I recently purchased a Crucial 2tb SSD SATA and a 4tb ED HDD. Both for $150.00 plus T/SH.

Would it be possible to add a game that uses directstorage to measure if it makes a difference when bypassing the CPU? It would be interesting to see if it makes any difference given the bottleneck moves to the GPU.

M.2 has nothing to do with heat. As others have noted, it's the controller that heats up when handling lots of writes.

Now, the thing is, irl you will very rarely trip thermal protection, you don't see that amount of writes every day. Then again, if you don't get to exercise massive sequential access all the time, why bother with PCIe5?

  • That's how "up to" works.
  • The "sequential write speed over time" graph is intentionally running at QD1, so that it shows what you can expect when copying a file to the drive. Other publications test this at higher queue depths to get a "maximum of the drive" result, which is just as valid, just slightly different in philosophy
  • Manufactures have long used this clearly 'false' marketing metric b$, in this instance its so far beyond actually real world perf, that this is actually a crime in the UK under currently regulations.
  • Yeap, I'm just saying that I am still waiting for the day when we have an SSD that will crack the 100MBs mark on 4kQD1 reads.

it's just 500 bucks? .. for 4 TB.. I think even in a 3rd world country like the US a kidney will yield more than that? maybe if you have no insurance and your kidney is presumed to be of lower quality

Hi,
If you need a heatsink like this just to keep an m.2 to the temps you show in the review I believe this will be a very hard sell considering pci-4 m.2's are 300.us max and one can use a 5-10.us heatsink on them.

Make up your mind. Expensive as hell or as a kidney? Or are you asking for two badges? :p

The flash chips operate better when warm actually, the only thing that needs cooling is the controller, but no SSD coolers just cool the controller itself that I'm aware of.
You know what? Now that you've mentioned it, it would be nice if someone looked into what temps do to 4kQD1 transfers. That's the bottleneck, I wonder if cooling the NAND affects the performance any.

Well remember the power also generates heat, so this issue contributes to the gen5 cooling issues as well.

I wonder in the consumer space who is buying these drives. A choice between no cooler but shuts down when hits max temp, fan cooling, or a large heat sink.

Someone must be as gen 5 drives keep been introduced to the market.

Hi,
Yeah it is !
ThermalRight has this same type of overkill m.2 coolers for under 10-15.us so where's the tb beef lol
I'd be sticking with much cheaper 1/2 price and easier to kool pci-4 at 4tb

I thought about it and felt that was a pretty niche activity for the vast majority of users. Setting up new testbench for 2024, and could certainly add it, so convince me ;)
Filesharing via torrent magnet links is very easy and a convenient way to share large files and folders for free. Of course you can also upload them to public/private trackers if you want for more fun :). I'm pretty sure a lot of the linux distros are distributed via torrents.
Say you want to share a 100GB folder with your friend, creating a magnet link and sharing that with him to p2p transfer the file is the only fast and free way to do it ?
You have to make a torrent file to get the magnet link.

I just occasionally upload on private trackers so I will make the torrent file and just upload that to the tracker.
