my xeon restarting whilst gaming

How did you run Prime95 and Valley? More-so Prime? Did you do large fft's? Small?

You might try OCCT and do the PSU test, it runs CPU and GPU tests at the same time...can be one helluva load. I use OCCT as one of my primary testing suites... Asus ROG Realbench as well is another good one that can bring out crashes and stability issues when others don't in my experience.

Random restarting tells me hardware fault. I'm thinking PSU or RAM....but could be related to a component overheating. How are your CPU temps? Is your MB set to turn off the system once the CPU reaches a certain temp?

Lego Worlds is actually a heavier load on systems than I expected it to be...my son's too addicted to Minecraft to give it much attention yet. Doesn't help that nobody else he plays games with has Lego Worlds. I wonder what your load and temps are when playing that game. Specifically RAM usage and CPU temps.

Any BSOD's? Any errors in system event logs prior to the restarts?

1. The BIOS is outdated (0303), try to update.
2. The 3rd DDR stick is a different brand.
3. Westmere Xeons aren't so stable in high BCLK. Its better to overclock by multiplier, and set BCLK according to your DDR speed.
4. Is it random restart? or BSOD too? please check the event log.
5. Your vcore is too high for 4GHz overclock.

thanks, No BSOD . i run both prime95 and valley at the same time, it happens when i changed the psu from 1000w to hx850w psu, i noticed that the 850 psu is getting warm fan spinning. temps are ok both cpu and gpu. will test if i can get a new psu at the moment don't have spare psu, brother took it the 1000w from me...

i took the different ram and still no joy

TIA

will test tomorrow night with different PSU. fingers crossed

Last time this happened to my Asus P9X79 WS and Xeon E5-1650 v1 it was because I had accidentally left throttling off for 7 months OCed @ 4.6......
The plastic CPU 8 Pin connector had melted and coated the pins....
RMAd the psu and replaced the connectors on board.
Check your 24 pin and 8 pin on mobo.

The photo shows BIOS version 303. The latest is 803.

Please post a screenshot of the DDR SPD values and current BIOS settings (uncore, BCLK, QPI, voltages).

Try to disable power saving features (C-States, SpeedStep, C1E).

Completely off topic and I apologize ahead but how's the cooling from the NZXT on ur gpu? How do you cool the rest of the card as it only cools the gpu die itself? I had a buddy ask me about it and I don't have any experience with it.

Hello, cooling is great the temps never go up 60c when stressing and there is extra fan(80mm) including the nzxt bracket to cool the vrm.

I'm having a weird one too which is similar. After waking from sleep or long shut down it'll just blank out/restart like it's a power problem during Quake Champions. But after I boot it up again, it won't do that again. Like it's some sort of cold boot issue or something. Temperatures all excellent and no stability issues in tests. One of those weird problems again...

Bought an old/new Psu with parts inside of course very cheap. With FX 8120 CPU and asus mobo with zalman z9 plus case. Will put the psu later after work.

but when it's fully shut off waited 30 sec until the power from system drained.
Not sure what you mean by "fully shut off" but that only happens if the PSU is unplugged from the wall, or (if it has one) the master power switch on the back of the power supply is set to "0" or "off". Otherwise, it is still in standby mode and +5Vsb standby voltage is still being applied to several points on the motherboard.

These were my thoughts exactly. And for sure, I always verify good power by swapping in known good PSU before moving on to other devices. You might have to pull all but one stick of RAM and see what happens - then swap sticks and do it again.

Note too there are other devices inside the computer that are heat sensitive besides the CPU. So you might open the side panel and blast a desk fan in there to see what happens.

Thanks for posting your follow-up!

I must say 100% fixed now. They've been playing for around an hour and pc still running. Lego world's with split screen.
