I'm no genius but that failed reporting is a big clue. Investigate with Task Manager and try to isolate the issue.Hello,
I have been struggling with my RTX 3080 Laptop 16GB 165TDP GPU being stuck in safe mode/idle at 210 MHz. I have tried so many things and occasionally think it’s fixed only to reappear after a restart or two with no software changes. GPU-Z shows my board power draw 752.7 Watts (impossible obviously) and my 8-pin #1 power draw over 746.6 watts (again impossible) and many other readings impossibly high. (See attached photos-high draw vs normal).
I thought my motherboard or GPU was done but sometimes after a restart it works perfectly again. I’m at a loss, the laptop is out of warranty I bought it 1 1/2 years ago but it’s still a high spec laptop that I paid $3000 for so I’d hate to throw it away and buy a new one already.
Anyway, I have scoured the internet and have tried many fixes that I will list the highlights below. I began to come to the conclusion that my motherboard or GPU is shot; but the thing that is confusing me is why it goes from being throttled due to too much power to working fine and vice versa after restarts with no software changes? Does hardware fail like this? Intermittently working properly/not working?
Attempted solutions I have tried:
Rolling back, uninstalling GPU Drivers with DDU in safe mode
Cleaned registry with CCleaner
Rolling back windows updates
Adjusting power and graphics in windows and nvidia control panel.
Removing OEM monitoring/control software (maingear node control center)
Downloading and installing all OEM files from manufacturer (maingear) reflashing the motherboard.
Adjusting Bios power mode and setting it to DGPU only
Flashing the GPU with different compatible roms with NVFlash
Fresh install of windows 11
Fresh install of windows 10.
I’ve thought I fixed it multiple times but I have now come to the conclusion that it just randomly starts working normally sometimes. Another thing to note, the OEM control panel software will not reinstall properly, it goes through the process of installation but leaves a blank shortcut and won’t launch. I’ve had it running properly without it installed though.
If there are any wizards out there that can figure this out I would be forever grateful.
Thanks for the reply,I'm no genius but that failed reporting is a big clue. Investigate with Task Manager and try to isolate the issue.

Thanks I’ll check it out, do you know if he can fix laptop GPUs or only does desktop work.Seems highly likely to be the issue shown in this video (also a 3080). Your PWR_SRC voltage is also off, although not as bad as in the video lol.
The guy who made the video does do repairs - I can recommend him, he is great to work with (had him working on my card very recently).

Don't know for sure, but his website implies he works on electronics in general so I suspect a laptop would be fineThanks I’ll check it out, do you know if he can fix laptop GPUs or only does desktop work.
Yes, he said he could take a look at it. The thing that has me second guessing is the intermittent periods of working vs not instead of just being hard stuck. Anyway thank you for your help and pointing me in the right direction!Don't know for sure, but his website implies he works on electronics in general so I suspect a laptop would be fine
