well i need the above, any suggestions appreciated, i swore WMP11 had DVD decoding capability (MPeg-2 Decoder). I have tried DIVX but that didnt work.

superdvdripper, easy to use and gives good results, uses xvid and lame.

To my understanding, VLC does come with a dvd decoder, but it is limited. The latest WMP should come with one. Make sure your region code is correct, for that sometimes blocks play back.

Powerdvd, windvd, Nvidia's Purevideo...etc, are a few of the payed dvd decoder. When you buy these products, you are actually buying rights to play dvd. A good example of this is with the orginal XBOX. It does not have dvd playback out of the box, but when you buy the dvd playback kit (the remote control) it then has the playback ability. The reason MS did not include it initially is to reduce costs.

Search for CCCP, its the best codec pack available on the tinterwebs IMHO
