i currently have a 6700XT but would like to upgrade for some of the newer games coming out that might struggle with my gpu should i opt for a used 6900XT off ebay which i can snag for 500$ if im paitent enough in my searchings or should i wait for the 9070XT to be back in stock? my main concern is i doubt the 9070XT will drop down to its 600$ msrp and i cant spend more than 500$ for a gpu right now

edit in some of the games i play i push the limits of the 12gigs of vram even with some of the graphical mods i use 12gigs is not enough also my main concern is will my system struggle at 1080p gaming with a 6900xt given my cpu or no?

specs below
cpu: 7800X3D
cpu cooler: cooler master ML360R 360mm aio with MX-4 TIM
gpu: 6700xt sapphire pulse
ram: 2x32gig ddr5 6000
mobo: asrock taichi lite B650E
psu: seasonic gold rated 1000 watt bought in 2021 so i have to assume its not an ATX 3.0 rated psu
case: phanteks enthoo primo
ssd: 1tb sabrent rocket pcie 4.0

A 6900XT at $500 might be your best option in the current market with a respectable amount of VRAM and great raster performance. The only decently priced Nvidia options are the 3080 / 3080 Ti but the VRAM buffer is only 10GB and 12GB respectively. They are faster in RT but you'd have to lower the texture settings to actually be able to see that advantage (which defeats the point IMO). Dead in the water.

FYI if you live in the United States expect prices to increase after the new tariffs go into effect around the 8th. Those will 100% kill MSRP ever being a thing during this gen.

@evernessince since i want to stick with AMD im not too fond of nvidia atm, how well at 1080p would my 7800X3D pair with a 6900XT? so many people tell me that for 1080p a 6900XT isnt worth it due to the huge bottleneck

It really depends which games you are playing. There are certainly AAA games that will push that card at 1080p but if you are playing eSports titles or other light games then yes it's not going to make much of a difference.

@evernessince heres a list of games i currently own and play two games not on the list god of war ragnarok and the last of us part 2

Some of your shown games would benefit from the 6900 XT (Shadow of the tomb raider, Assassin's Creed games) at 1080p. God of war and The Last of Us would definitely as well.

That's a decent enough mix of demanding games to warrant the 6900 XT IMO.

6900 XT for five hundred feels extra expensive. 6800 XT isn't much worse and if you're not a virgin to overclocking, the difference is even smaller. Perhaps it sells for significantly less.

Also worth checking on 7900 GRE.

maybe a 7800XT as an option?

In all honesty I'd just wait and adjust your graphics settings as required.

@evernessince whats the max price you think i should pay on ebay for a used 6900XT?

Your earlier figure of $500 is a fine max IMO. Looking at recently sold cards, you might be able to snag one for around $450 - $480 used. Not terrible considering the state of the market.

The problem with the 7800 XT is price is highly variable. I'm seeing anywhere from $500 all the way up to $700. Good if you can snag one for the $500 - $580, although the latter figure is outside OP's budget.

If the market wasn't going absolutely nuts right now, a 7900GRE (~6950XT w/ better RT) is about right for your needs and about the right price (previously.

Hello,

The 9070 XT would be the best option, considering the rest of the system CPU, RAM, PSU. It would also represent a substantial GPU upgrade. Perhaps overkill for 1080p right now, but changing the monitor some time in the future isn't as big of a hassle as getting a GPU upgrade.
Its MSRP however is over your current limit. And the current street prices are a few notches above that.
If you can wait and perhaps save some money in the meantime then hopefully in a few months things will go in the right direction for you.
If you're sure you can't save more money over the following months then other options that fit your budget would make more sense, like the 7800 XT and 7900 GRE. If let's say you would have a choice between 6900 XT used at $450 and 7800 XT new at $500 I would choose the 7800 XT.

why the 7800XT if its only 100$ more please clarify

If ya gonna spend 500 dollars on 2 gen old power hungry gpu I suggest spend slightly more get a 9070 non xt …. Invest in your parts wisely, make your spending go further

sadly the 90 series cards arent in stock let alone at msrp and i refuse to pay 900+ for a 9070
Now is a bad time to get a new video card new or used, since there is no steady supply or pricing right now. If you can wait until June or July, you will be better off since the 5060 and 9060 cards should be out and there should be a better supply of the 5070 and 9070 cards.
