My current chair, pictured here, is on its last legs. It's over 20 years old and really needs replacing. I have unsuccessfully trialled a few different chairs, and have found that they gave me backache and other discomfort, even the ergonomic ones. My current chair is incredibly comfortable for me, even though it hails from an era when ergonomics weren't even a consideration when designing a chair. Straight-backed, with a slight backward slant; thick, unyielding foam; slight overhang on the seat cushion. This is the kind of chair I need, but I'm struggling to find anything like it. Ergonomics is the watchword these days, and it seems nigh-on impossible to find something like this. Can anyone help me?

I don't see how anyone can help you. A chair is just so personal. Regardless how a chair "fits" me or anyone else, only you can decide if it fits you. And sadly, as I am sure you know, a chair fan feel great when you first sit in it, but after a few hours, feel like a death trap.

I think you just need to find an office supply store and try them out. They will be more expensive there, but let's face it, spreading that cost over the next 20 years and 1000s of hours sitting in it, the wallet pain will not be bad at all.

If you really like the chair you have, and it is still mechanically okay, maybe you should think of having it re-stuffed and upholstered.

If you are prepared to spend ~$600, go to an office supply store (not like Staples--a place that specializes in quality office goods), and see what they have. I have a 2005 Global Granada and I love it.

I also second the upholster notion.

Right! I should have made that clear. An office "furniture" store, not Staples or OfficeDepot/OfficeMax or whatever you have on your side of the big pond.

That's an ergonomic chair, I said they give me backache.

Call a physical therapist. They will refer you to someone that sells chairs. But be prepared to fork out

On a side note. I have issues when I sit too much. I have to exercise daily. otherwise I just hurt from old injuries. I don't know if you can exercise but it works for me

It could be your muscles adjusting to the new norm. After a week, your back ache may go away. Maybe...

This is where I am - with old injuries, old age, worn out hip and arthritis.

My problem is, it hurts when I exercise - but it hurts worse when I don't!

If an ergonomic chair gives you backaches, then it is not "ergonomically" adjusted correctly for you.

Reminds me of the new Lincoln Continental to be released later this years with seats that adjust 30!!! ways.

Red,
if you have back aches, sitting for any period will only exasperate the issue's. They have a chair cover that has built in heat/massage, home medic's makes them. There not cheap but seem to really hold value http://www.homedics.com/

In my experience Homedics equipment is not durable/dependable/robust. Exepect it to break frequently.

Had a lot of back and ass issue sitting at the desk as much as I do. Went through numerous $200+ POS staples style chairs over the years. Have been very pleased with my Herman Miller Aeron, but it did set me back close to $700. Ont he flip side, my back and ass thank me every time I sit in it! This chair is mesh, and yeilds much nicer than foam and plastic versions I have had prior. Also it is much cooler to use in the warmer months without creating swamp-ass!

Do not buy direct, you can save a fair bit shopping around for them. Also be sure to realize the chair comes in various sizes for larger or smaller bums to fit.

Everyone should do this anyway. Take walks - with good posture - at the very least.

Head over to your favorite office supply store an put your butt to work! Literally, lol.

Take that chair to a reputable upholsterer/furniture repair store; and, see if they can make it new for you.
I did that, about, a year ago; because, I could find a new couch that was made worth a crap.
Seems like quality now... ain't the same as it used to be.
