NEW CPU not working no post. but old one still does.

Hello,

I have a Gateway GT5012 and I am trying to upgrade my CPU to Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core Processor QX6700 2.6 GHz 8M L2 Cache LGA775 desktop CPU

When I turn it on there is no post and I can't turn off the computer unless I unplug it. How ever with the stock CPU Intel 820 Pentium D it works just fine If I put that one back in. Any ideas why it wont post do I need to flash the bios with an upgrade?
 
Your Motherboard's BIOS may not be compatible with the Quad core Processor, have a look on the manufacturer's site for any BIOS updates.
Not all 775 Motherboards can take Quad cores, as basic versions were made for dual cores or Pentium D only
The BIOS download link is here, check you have the latest, which is dated 2010/07/27

It might help if you look for the manual and see if Quad core Processors are compatible also.

Some of those OEM motherboard only support specific CPUs. They're not retail so they save money by limiting the options

But update the BIOS and cross your fingers

Ok I will try updatig the Bios now. Fingers crossed! :)
 
While you are doing that, take note of the model number and manufacturer of the motherboard, we may be able to find a result for that.
The manual wasn't helpful.
 
IF the PC is standard with A Pentium D then the Hardware will not support Core 2 cpu's, Intel Used the 775 Socket for a long time, so just because it fits doesn't mean it will work.

What chipset is in the computer ?

I get this error message when trying to update the bios "this program is unable to continue. Internal System error: There is a programming or internal problem.
 
If it doesn't work, it's best to leave it alone as the system functions as it was designed.
You might have to settle for a faster dual core processor with the same FSB and Lithography (manufacturing die size).
Without knowing the motherboard we wont know if it is capable of a higher FSB such as 1333 instead of 800MHz.
 
I finally figured out why it isn't updating! It told me tha windows is blocking the request to install an unsigned driver.
is there any way of getting around this?

it also says E210882 the motheboad
 
The reason i am trying to upgrade my processer is I want somthing that will support windows 10
 
Windows 10 is not a resource hog, like everyone thinks. It runs on cheap chinese tablets, and it ran on my ZBOX ID41, which has a crap-of-the-crop Atom D525 in it!
My advice - sell all of this crap and build an entry-level modern PC. Not only that Gateway PC is a fire hazard, it is also a power hog comparing to more recent hardware.

Even something like this is going to be enough for surfing and multimedia:

Simply throw in some used laptop RAM and a HDD, and you are good to go.

Used descent C2D motherboard are hard to find and over priced. I guess if you fined something cheap. Personally I wouldn't put any money into it. Because the next problem you're going to have will be the Motherboard fitting in that case. Upgrading an OEM PC is just a cluster of issues. As far as running 10 you may have to work some magic on the drivers but it will run it

I've got a similar board that has a similar issue, the 946GTZ, it can't run Windows 10 and won't run quad core CPU's.
I did the reserve Windows thing and it wasn't suitable.
