Most of you have probably heard by now the story of Mrs. Jennifer Strange. She participated in a radio contest in an attempt to win a Nintendo Wii for her children. The contest determined a winner based on who could drink the most water. Unfortunately, a few hours after Mrs.Strange participated, she died of water intoxication.

Anyways, there was almost a court case to file criminal charges against the radio station. The would-be prosecution determined that the whole event was one tragic accident, and that there was no way the radio station could have prevented the death of Jennifer Strange. This is because Mrs.Strange did not show any signs of water intoxication at the event. The radio station has fired 10 employees since the tragic incident. A wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Strange family against the radio station remains in court.

man that is sad

was a kinda a stupid competition imo

Another one for the Darwin awards. I had always assumed that even idiots would know not to drink too much water too quickly, but I guess I was wrong :(

They're just asking for sympathy when they posted the reason behind the mother's competition. Sure it was a stupid challenge hazardous to health, but let's keep things in perspective and unbiased. Best not add personal feelings to it. :ohwell:

yes, you would think so wouldn't you but I still amazed by the otherwise smart people I know who think they are being "healthy" by drinking loads of water. I was at a party once and my friends wife was telling us how she was drinking 5-6 litres of water. I told her that was really too much and she was risking her health - she didn't believe me until another friend, a doctor, chipped in and told her I was absolutely right.

Another story I heard was of a friends husband who ran The Great North Run 2 years ago ( a half marathon I think). He collapsed with dehydration and the untrained volunteers at the medical tent gave him 4 pints of water, and he was so out of it he drank it and ended up in hospital for 3 days.

Didnt the radio station learn from the UC Davis student who died from drinking to much water? I guess not...good they fired those dumbass'

It wasn't a UC Davis student that died, it was a Chico State student.

water intoxication is there such thing?!
Yes, pretty much everything is toxic when you get too much of it.:shadedshu
You can get Oxygen Intoxication and Nitrogen Intoxication.

That's the most bizzare story I've heard since April fools day.

"A person with two healthy kidneys can excrete about 900ml (0.24 gal)/hr.[2] Consuming as little as 1.8 litres of water (0.48 gal) in a single sitting may prove fatal for a person adhering to a low-sodium diet, or 3 litres (0.79 gallons) for a person on a normal diet."

Ziis, scariest stuff I've read in years.

omfg what retardedness. You cant overdose on water, the only time water can potentially kill is if it hasnt gone through the right filters in the first place or a foreign contaminent got into the water. I assume it would of been bottled water, so if anyone should be in question its the company that provided the water.

WAIT! WAIT! WAIT! WAIT! How the hell can you get water intoxication? Is not your body 2/3 water? This doesnt make sense to me. Someone care to explain. This is the first Ive heard of this.

Your body operates with an optimum concentration of... well just about everything that makes up your blood. It is transported within water, as you will well know. If there is too much water then your body cannot use passive transport to carry necessary nutrients and other things (including I would assume oxygen) through the walls of your cells, or through the semi-permeable membranes which are throughout your body.. Also if animal cells get bloated by osmosis (which an overdose of water would cause) because of a lack of a cell wall they will burst. The body controls the concentration of the blood by either drinking more water to decrease the concentration, or by filtering more water into your pee to get rid of water and hence increase the concentration. Drink too much water at once and this process cannot take place. There is also the fact that drinking a lot of ANYTHING especially something which passes though the body so easily as water could presumably rupture capillaries as your blood pressure fluctuates!

Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it's 'retarded'... ;)

Once again, you've proven have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Water intoxication is documented, and quite common in marathon/long distance runners.

Interesting, I've never heard a single case of it, even in the London marathon. I'm also tired of your obnoxious rude attitude, consider yourself reported.

Likewise! I've got many examples of rude language and libeling posts from yourself.

did you know if youve been dehydrated for a prolonged period of time water is actually bad for you? you have to give them cups at a time in increments i hear.

why are people willing to do such stupid things for the wii

If only she had read the wiki on Water intoxication, tsik tsik tsik.:(

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication

"Nearly all deaths related to water intoxication in normal individuals have resulted either from water drinking contests, in which individuals attempt to consume several gallons over the course of just a few minutes"
