No display until force restart AMD RX580

So the issue basically is, when I press the computer's power button, it generally starts up. However, I notice a quick blink of a white light and the fan spins really fast for a short time on the GPU. Then, I hear the Windows starting sound, but the screen stays black and the monitor doesn't seem to get any signal from the GPU. But I think the computer is still working fine in the background. Now if I press and hold the power button for more than 5 seconds to force restart the computer, then everything will boot normally. (The fan doesn't spin too fast, the white light doesn't blink, and the screen shows up as expected) The PC will run for hours without any issues.

When it happens?
If I normally restart the computer or if i shutdown and turn in back on within short period of time, the issue doesn't show up. It only happens if I try to start the computer the next day after shutting it down and unplugging it. This has been happening at least for some months now.

Troubleshoot I've tried:
  • turned off fast startup and hibernation from windows power settings.
  • reset MSI Afterburner profile and disabled windows startup option.
  • stress tested the GPU to see if something is unusual but nothing seems extraordinary.

Computer Specifications:

Software
  • OS: Windows 11 version 22H2 build 22621.2134
  • AMD Adrenalin Software: 23.5.2
  • Radeon RX 580 Driver Version: 31.0.14057.5006
Hardware
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H
  • Graphics Card: Gigabyte RX 580 Gaming 8G
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB DDR4 3200Mhz
  • Storage 1: Gigabyte UD Pro 240GB SSD
  • Storage 2: Seagate Barracuda 1TB Hard drive
  • Power Supply: Antec VP500P Plus 500watt
  • Display: ViewSonic VA2215-H

The whole setup has been around 2 years old at this point but it wasn't used as a regular though (on average 5 days a month). Let me know if you need some more info to help me troubleshoot and get rid of this issue.

If you have been using a particular port on the card for the display, does the issue still happen after switching to another port on the card?

Have only one HDMI port on the card (others are DP) and my monitor supports HDMI only (and VGA). So no option of switching ports.

Could it be a dying PSU, perhaps?

I vote this as well, the inrush of current probably under powers the GPU and it doesn’t initialize correctly.

Any issues with the date and time when first starting windows?

Any issues with the date and time when first starting windows?

I used to notice incorrect time (zone?) even though the time zone option was set correctly in the settings. the time would usually get fixed after clicking 'sync now' button. it happened for few times only. not sure if the issues are related. BTW the no display booting issue hasn't happened till now since posting this thread. (cold booted 3 times after shut down since then)

What I did since posting this thread:
  • Updated adrenalin software (gpu driver) after using DDU.
  • Completely got rid of MSI Afterburner (didn't uninstall tho).
  • Updated my monitor driver (tho the version was from 2021)

Do you have a different graphics card or monitor to test with?

Nope. neither. (The thing is. it works fine all the time after successful booting. only happens during the boot after a good amount of time since shutting down)

Btw are those spikes in the GPU clock normal? Wasn't using any gpu intensive application though. Just normal usage.

Maybe you have something running in the background that causes those spikes

Edit: fwiw, this is what my card looks like when just idling with the forum and gpu-z open, and discord open in the background. Different card than yours, but my previous card, the more similar RX570 behaved similarly as my current card (i.e. I didn't experience the same spikes you're experiencing), just with higher idle power consumption.

Normal if you're using both Linux and Windows on same machine.

I think either display or video cable is faulty. It could also be static electricity.

Yes. I had dual booted Linux few months ago. Maybe related to that

Sorry. Forgot to make an update. Those spikes were a bug due to the Adrenalin Software from AMD. Uninstalled Adrenalin and installed GPU Driver only. Didn't see those periodical spike anymore. Related: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/gpu-clocks-spikes-when-idle.302852/

It could also be static electricity.
I get spark almost every time when plugging in/plugging out the power cable in the power outlet. Is it related to static electricity?

A little arcing is common when plugging in something that is ready to immediately draw power. You can avoid it if you turn off your power supply before plugging it into the wall, and turning it on only after you've plugged it in.

Try changing the battery on the motherboard. Weak batter can cause all sorts of odd issues.
Time zone shouldn't change when booting Linux, only time can be wrong.

Update as of 21st August 2023

I haven't noticed this issue since posting this.

Changes I've made since:

  • Reset GPU undervolting profile and uninstalled MSI Afterburner.
  • Removed AMD Adrenalin Software (using DDU) & installed in Driver Only mode.
  • Updated my monitor driver (tho I suspect it was up to date already)
  • Reset and Updated BIOS to the latest version.

How is your GPU Clock/Memory/Power Draw so low? would you mind sharing your OC profile?

Do I get it right that you see BIOS splashscreen and it goes full-on radio silence whilst booting OS?

If yes then it's almost definitely failing GPU to display connection. Get yourself 100% working HDMI to HDMI and HDMI to DP cables so you could tell for the fact if it's gone.

If it's not then try testing different GPU, display and PSU.

Nothing helps, it's probably a failing CPU.

Nope. No display at all before force restarting.

(No splash screen either. The monitor indicator shows no signal)
Then your in-OS actions made no sense. The trouble is 100% hardware based.

Try my suggestions regardless.

Oh, almost forgot. Clean your contacts with isopropanol. Won't hurt.

Not sure if the issue is gone or not. It's just I've not experienced it since then. Another little thing I might add, I've been powering off the PSU (via the back power button in PSU) before unplugging it and power it on after plugging in.

try testing different GPU, display and PSU.
Having one of those in my hand certainly means purchasing it. In that case I'd need to visit the local PC repair shop to troubleshoot the issue, detect and change the required hardware.

Which contacts you mean?

PCI-E connector on your GPU, the PCI-E socket itself. Cables' ends, ports both on the monitor and on the GPU, all that stuff. Just to kill the idiot.

Doncha have friends with stuff you could borrow for a night?

That's one of correct ways of doing it.

Display and PSU? Maybe I'll have some luck with that. GPU? not much. Since most of them have APUs and the ones have won't share with me (for other reasons ofc). I'll try tho if the issue shows up again. I'm betting it's the PSU (or might be the GPU) but highly unlikely of the display since I've changed it recently and the problem was occurring before that.

GPU? not much
Finding a used GT 210 for a single figure dollar sum is not an issue since mining hysteria and covidiotia are gone. Getting an HDMI cable isn't expensive either.

Yeah, then skip the display swap.
I'm betting it's the PSU
Get yourself a new one then. Skimping on a PSU is always a bad call so go as shopping as you can afford. I understand if you don't buy a 1200 W super mega platinum XXXXXX PSU, it's unnecessary with your build but a quality 700 W PSU won't hurt. Chieftec Proton or EVGA for the rescue.

You can find it from your vram(gpu z first page)
Micron or samsung or skynix

Also you can go in gpu z in advanced section.
then select bios and check message id:
Is f80, f90 or fy0?

for example my nvidia card:
1.gif
for my nvidia card it says : message pg190

To those who find this page after searching for answers, the problem is with HDMI. I plugged my HDMI cable into a HDMI to DP adapter and plugged that in my card, presto, problem solved. This is a stupid bug that should have been fixed years ago.
