In this example, NVIDIA showed a representative frame of Metro Exodus using DXR for global illumination. The top graph shows a Pascal GPU, with only FP32 compute, having a long render time in the middle for the effects. The middle bar, shwoing an RTX 2080 but could equally be a GTX 1660 Ti, shows FP32 and INT32 compute working together during the RT portion of the workload and speeding the process up. The final bar shows the effect of adding RT cores to the mix, and tensor cores at the end.

Back on topic, this is excellent news! Maybe now we’ll finally see more games take advantage of this technology, and it also opens up the possibility of using ray tracing for millions more people, effectively increasing the installed base exponentially, so game developers finally have an excuse to add support for it in their games!

When put in a graphic it actually doesn't look so big a gap, makes purecain i think with his titanV in for a shout officially though it's also important to remember they're not the same teir of Raytracing and global illumination for example won't be supported.

Not only that, but the tech will be better optimized where it will run faster and be less of a performance penalty.
It's new and developers are only just learning how to use it.

Don't tag this as a low quality post because it's true.

Except, you know, the part where ray tracing is an extension not core element, so it's not. Good luck running Ray Tracing on Fermi as a prime example.

Any DX12 capable card can use DXR. AMD or Nvidia. Don't tag this as a low quality post because it's true. You need to do better than that.
*If DXR part of API is implemented in drivers.
So far this exists for Volta and RTX Turing. Now Pascal midrage and up and non-RTX Turings get it.

At the end of the day it will great to see how other cards ie- non RTX cards perform, it's great Nv are bringing support to Pascal, lets hope AMD drop a driver for their cards too, then we can finally judge if the RT cores gives a real benefit and by how much.

A GPU feature doesn't bring money until it is used in consoles. Sure, there are niche examples, but those are free add-ons on existing paid games. Right now people don't buy the game especially for Ray-Tracing, so devs won't program games with RT in mind.
Nividia, including more cards in the equation, hopes to convince devs to dedicate more time to this. And, on long run, to convince the console guys to buy nvidia chips for the next gen.
I assume also that AMD, with the Crytek show of RT on the Vega 56, is aware of all this fight for the next gen consoles.

This also puts RTX in a different perspective than it did at launch. The USP for getting one has been damaged further. Now its not a unique new feature, but just a faster one; without content to show for it.
