Why was RTX4000 codenamed AD, and not L or LO? Every other generation was named by surname only AFAIK?

Perhaps this isn't as LO as Nvidia can go :) They're saving this for 7000 series! Turn a seven upside down...

More serious note; Every other generation didn't have the structure you might think... GK, GM, GP? The G was for Geforce I believe. You could say it all went to shit when they stopped wearing a G...

Turing was TU because GT was taken by the Tesla uArch. Ada Lovelace is the only one I know that is a full name, and they just took the two first letters as Ampere had taken GA already.

Why it was Ada Lovelace instead of just Lovelace I am not sure.
But I have a sneaking suspicion that it was due to Ada being a female and the sociopolitical climate...

Not that it matters, it is just the only reason I can think of.

There is also the porn reference wrt Lovelace. I think we might be on the money here

nvidia has reached the "Too big to fail" status and now everything goes.

It is very obviously a thing of the current climate of acknowledging female historical scientists. No tinfoil hat required.

This is tinfoil hat territory.

Not quite sure trying to distance the internet from it's inevitable quest to link things to porn is really that conspiratorial.

The part about it being intentional, as in a joke.

I wouldn't chalk it up to merely pandering to the current cultural climate, as NVIDIA named an architecture after Marie Curie almost 20 years ago. Given NVIDIA's naming criteria (i.e. historically significant physical scientists and/or engineers) I'd say that having two out of 14 architecture namesakes being women is a justifiable ratio in its own right.

Oh yes, just that it was Ada Lovelace instead of just the surname, more of a distinction.

Curie was the architecture, not "Marie Curie"

But does anyone believe that it was named after Pierre? I don't think so.
No, certainly not. My only point was that the only instance of using a full name was a female, and in a much more woke society than has ever been before. I didn't think it was a coincidence.

This is a good question. "AL" would have made the most sense since the datacentre architecture concurrent with Lovelace is named after Grace Hopper and abbreviated GH, but most likely NVIDIA was aware of the Ada programming language that itself is abbreviated AL, and wanted to avoid confusion.

Rubbish. As above, Hopper GPUs are abbreviated GH. Why must you man-children turn everything that involves a woman, into a woke conspiracy theory?

It's almost like women are woke.

#ohwaitthatsthewholeidea

after Grace Hopper and abbreviated GH
I think that is due to the actual architecture being titled "Hopper" and the die naming convention being GX, where X is the first letter of the architecture codename. As noted above, GA was taken by Ampere, as GT was taken by Tesla, wherefore Ada Lovelace and Turing use a different convention.

As above, I think Hopper is GH due to precedent and not given name. I honestly don't care why the architecture was names "Ada Lovelace" instead of "Lovelace" but that is what I consider the most likely reason. It doesn't make any difference to me why, but if you have a more likely theory, please share it! I always like to learn.

The real and unsolvable issue will arise several generations from now, when the pool of suitable historical scientists & engineers is exhausted, and the only remaining options will be, uhm, GeForce Gordon Moore (GG) and GeForce Lisa Su (GL or GS or LS).

Fear, entertainment, insecurity, blaming the other, and/or being convinced it's true.

On topic, you can bet primary reasons for naming any product gets researched. Things like a serial killer with the same last name, illicit material, political references, or anything remotely controversial are all screened out. That's why when something like Meta/FB's new "Grand Teton" AI project slipping by was so funny.

Exactly my point, that porn reference was to be avoided. I remember when Nvidia first unveiled the name of the arch, this was one of the main oneliners: 'Oh, linda?'. But now, we're saying ADA.

Its very likely all of the above suggestions are part true.

And let's not forget that before their Gx chips (GT Turing, GP Pascal, GM Maxwell, GK Kepler, GF Fermi, GT Tesla) they went just with G in the 70-90 cards and before that simply with NV for NVdia. So their Farenheit, Celsius, Curie and Rankine cards never had any G in their name.

Let's just admire that they name their architectures after scientists.
They can always do GS for Sagan or GH for Hawkins for their next cards...

Very confusing isn't it.

What's in a name sequence anyway, time and again they last a few years, they're scientists so absolutely their name should be respected, if worthy, even lakes will end,. And Zen's, and yep, eventually Geforces, who among the Brits ever saw the death of the fiesta coming for example:p not I.
