Well I am going from an EVGA 680i mobo to an Asus P5Q hooked to my Logitech G51 5.1 speakers and quite frankly, it sounds like shit. Its popping and cracking and pretty muddy sounding when playing music through Winamp and I have enabled hardware acceleration in Vista 64 by installing OpenAL and it still sounds awful. I know onboard isn't exactly the best in the world, but is the Realtek controller on that 680i board any better than the SoundMax or whatever on the P5Q? It seemed to sound better by leaps and bounds before.

Try different drivers. They can make a world of difference.

My P5Q Deluxes onboard Soundmax is pretty decent, I was impressed with it overall...though I'd much rather listen to my stuff through my trusty X-Fi XtremeMusic. Onboard can't quite touch it, at least to my ear. But I was without the X-Fi for about a week and didn't mind dealing with the onboard at all, the control panel is kind of funky at first, but it gets the job done, once tuned it does sound pretty good. Maybe your version has a different sound chip in it? Is it a plain P5Q? Pro? -E? Deluxe? etc?

Its a P5Q Deluxe. I just updated the drivers from the Asus website, but it still is popping as bad as a 1926 Victrola... Ugh.

Hi,

The same happens to me on my P5Q-E I got in January, from time to time. I noticed there was lots of popping one day, and the next day nothing. I have the latest drivers installed. The problem seems to be appearing randomly on my system. Have you had any luck getting rid of it on yours?

Try a different set of drivers and reinstall the microsoft UAA audio drivers. Check for the latest driver from the chip maker rather than on the ASUS webpage, they are usually not the newest available.

Thanks for your answer Frederik.

I'm going to try the microsoft UAA audio drivers. Regarding the audio chip driver, soundmax states on this page that they don't provide any driver themselves, so unfortunately it seems I won't be able to get more recent drivers than the ones found on asus' website... Unless there is some workaround I'm not aware of.

Ah damn.. usually you can get generic ones from soundmax as well, maybe you can find a non-rebranded driver somewhere. If not you basically have to wait untill ASUS publishes a new one.

OK, i'll have a look to see if i can find a non-rebranded driver. The weird thing with this issue is that it is very intermittent: i noticed it a few weeks ago, and the next day it was gone. It did it again this morning, I restarted the computer and now it seems to be gone.... Really strange. I'll update this thread if I find out some generic driver, or more about this issue. Thanks for your answers Frederik.

Sure no problem. Please revisit this thread once you solved the problem. I had the same problem on my old Gigabyte MB.

It was on and off like you describe it. A new driver from soundmax directly solved the problem.

I just remembered something else you can try. Have a look in the audio settings under advanced I think and see if you can turn off hardware acceleration for the audio card. That might help.

BTW: did you take your name from the function in Maple?

Thanks for your advice, I've now turned off the hardware acceleration. Now let's see if the problem reappears. I'll still try to find a replacement driver.

Regarding my username, indeed it comes from the function in Maple. Congratulations to you in finding this out, as I've been using it for about 9 years now, and you're the first person that made the connection.
