opteron lappy

so, im helping my friend manhandle a opteron 165 into a laptop, obviously it was not designed for this type of dual core setup. first thing we are doing is glas beeding all the paint off the heatsincs and pulling the heatspreader off ad machining a solid copper large diameter shim to go in its place. any one know of utilitys to controll the fan speed of fans in laptops or a good hardware temp monitor? the chips all support monitoring but we dont hav any software to do it with off hand... hes going to run windows on it, i know of motherboard monitor but dont know if its still updated or if it supports laptops to begin with.

thoughts and or ideas would be great... (no watercooling)

this is an HP laptop that uses a standard 939 socket and in THEORY should support dual channel ram in this set up...

Notebook Hardware control will monitor temps and show them in the sys tray for the HDD, gfx (not in this case) and cpu.

At a 110 watts TDP how hot do you think that thing will run?

I reckon any fan will be 100% all the time and it'll still be overheating in a lappy.

its got a midrange socket 939 cpu in it already that has a fairly hi wattage use. i think with the mods we are doing to it it should not run much hotter then stock...

arctic silver 5 in places, building custom copper shimms instead of the stock steel ones, opening up some of the air holes... it should be fine. the stock cool uses a 2 heat pipe settup and its mostly copper.

I know my mates Core Duo lappy doesn't turn the fans on till it gets to 72 degrees C but generally I like to keep AMD stuff below 60 at full load.Cool'n'Quiet will help anyway.

With the laptop at 'presumably' 15.4 inch the heat dissipation should be enough, just be sure to get an external cooler with preferably three fans (3700rpm), and that should really make sure that nothing goes wrong. As usual if it does start to overheat just lower its speeds a tad and set up alarms. When its all up and ready tell me what it runs like, I'd like to know! Sounds a fun build

Oh and fan control for laptops especially hp's have always been a problem in my experience. Some apps work some don't, and occasionally none seem to work at all. But the usual 'might', speedfan, hmonitor etc you know the drill
