I saw a acer 5551 on ebay last week and picked it up(only 350) and just got it today, it runs pretty good but the integrated is a HD4250, I got a temp gun and checked the temps of the GPU and saw it was only at 49C on the GPU and 58C(temp sensor shows 60 though) on the CPU whle playing left 4 dead for a while, i'd like to give it to my brother.

Laptops generally don't have sufficient enough cooling to overclock.(A lot of Laptops don't even allow you to change the frequencies in the BIOS anyways)

Maybe you can use some software in Windows to overclock, but as i said, you won't be able to go far.

you might be able to OC the 4250 with afterburner, my laptop has a 5650 that benefited greatly from a nice little overclock, something in the order of 15% more performance.

still working on oc'ing the i5 in her tho.

Dunno if you've checked out this thread or not, but that's where I would start if I was you: Laptop overclocking adventures

Seems to have some decent results for quite a few folks in there. :toast:

So far I have tried

AMD Overdrive:Freezes when advanced mode is enabled, crashes everything. . . . . . .
Rivatuner:does nothing special, no overclock options.
ATI TOOL:Cannot install driver(64bit)
ATI Tray Tools:Freezes when run
MSI Afterburner: Does nothing, nothing can be changed
AMD GPU Tool:Wrong clocks does nothing
TPU GPU Tool:Freezes

I don't know what else to do, do you guys think the bios can be modded to enable overclocking, it seems like this laptop can be a decent overclocker based on the temps.

have you rebuilt windows fresh and whacked on all new drivers? would be a good place to start before trying to overclock again, might make shit stop freezing, or might give you proper readings/control in other apps.

have you checked out set fsb for possible cpu overclock?? you can check the chipset for clockgen on their website if its not listed it still may work you would just need to check all the available clockgens within the program something like 35 diff clockgens but worth it in the end. as far as gpu use gpu-z to dump the bios and rbe to check settings buty if it freezes during trying to overclock i would wait before bios odding it may brick the ystem if done wrong. have you installed all the latest drivers etc?? like as in they are not the drivers that windows auto installs??

EDIT: duhoh! wolf ninja'd me on that last part!

im gonna try booting xp, i mean a friend of mine bought a notebook that had the option it was one of those cheap brands from china with almost the same specs and got the 4200 to almost 960mhz, . . . . . .

it was a long process but i got xp running on it and was able to overclock the GPU a little, with the GPU TOOL on xp I was able to get the GPU stable at 890mhz, any further and the laptop runs out of power, they overclock like hell but its just hard to get them to overclock and GPU-Z dosen't detect the clocks, I had to run the stream bench in sandra to figure out they changed.

I have an Acer Aspire 3680 with a Celeron 520 which is pretty much a Core Solo, but anyway... I used a program called setFSB. I used it for overclocking by the bus speed getting my 1.6 up to 2.0. It also over clocked the system ram a little. However you'll need to know the PLL or w/e of your system. I'd recommend putting some better thermal paste on the CPU and cleaning out any dust and maybe getting one of those cooling pads if your going to overclock the cpu (and ram due to bus speed).

as for graphics you can use a program called Riva Tuner for that. It can be set to load the gpu clocks at startup and force the gpu fan speed to max to help with the heating issues.

I think there are other programs out there for setting the cpu fan speed as well
