Overclocking a Q8200

the low multi makes it a bitch. he better have some high MHz ram and a good, high FSB capable mobo.

they have a really low multiplier and decently high fsb

333x7 = 2333 mhz

i would shoot for 400mhz fsb first

400x7 = 2800mhz

for this cpu 3200mhz would be really really sweet

460x7 = 3220mhz

however for many boards 460fsb is quite high, so a P35/680i or less might not cut it.

personally i prefer the Q6600 to this chip, as you have a multi of 9, which makes it much easyer to get to 3ghz and above.

from my experiences you should get the 2.8ghz settings on stock volts, and it will be a zippy chip for the price.
 
i'll always reccomend a higher multi over a higher FSB. you can increase the FSB, but you cant raise a multi. a chip thats 266x7 or 333x7 is no different in the eyes of an overclocker - you get the same MHz in the end.

400x7 should be your first milestone, as thats achievable on most boards, even 1:1 with mere 800Mhz ram.

the lower the value, the higher the FSB has to be, the Higher the Multi the lower the FSB.

example, 2200 MHZ= 200FSBx 11 2200 MHz= 100FSB x 22

if you want a multiplier unlocked chip from intel, be prepared to pay 1000+ USD.
 
45nm quad fsb limit is near 430MHz
so if you get it stable over 3GHz then its really good cpu.
 
I guess it depends on the chip itself
 
also be prepared to cool it as the 45nm quad get quite hot
 
When i had a Q8200, samething bought from frys, i was able to take it to 3.2Ghz~-3.3Ghz stable for some bench runs, only thing holding it back was the 790i's FSB with Quads mine topped to 480Mhz if your friend is has a good Quad-Core overclocking motherboard the Q8200 is actually a decent choice.
 

Most decent P45's wil acheive that, like you (or someone else) said, if hehas a p35 or x38 then about 460 (P35) or 480 (x38) is the limit.

Of course there is probably a pin mod somewhere that might open up some multipliers!

Sorry I think you misread my post, I know what a multi is on a proc I was asking what the max multi number for this proc is but that was allready answered.

What OC did you get from your friends Q8200 assuming he did let you play with it?
 
I got 2940Mhz CV 1.304 FSB 420.
Over 3.0 Ghz it becomes unstable. Do I need to up the CV in BIOS manually?

yes.. you need to set the voltage manually in the BIOS. dont go over 1.36-1.4v
