Pc locks up completely at random forcing me to reboot by holding the power button.
Crash is not on gpu or cpu 100%, its random.

-When:
During gaming, doesnt matter what as long as its not some ancient game.

-Specs:
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 19042) (19041.vb_release.191206-1406)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97P-D3
BIOS: BIOS Date: 09/18/15 16:34:18 Ver: 04.06.05 (type: BIOS)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670K CPU @ 3.40GHz ( Scythe Mugen V2 cooler and Noctua NT-H1 Paste)
Memory: Crucial Ballistics 16GB DDR3-1600MHz
GPU: iChill NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti X3 11GB (Noctua NT-H1 Paste)
Driver: 466.47 (install using DDU guide as usual)
Current Mode: 3440 x 1440 (32 bit) (75Hz) thru Displayport cable
Monitor: iiyama PL3493WQ
PSU: Seasonic Focus-GX 750W
OS SSD: Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256GB (96% on crystaldisk info)
Steam and games on SSD: SanDisk Ultra II 960GB (79% on crystaldisk info)

-Temps:
Gpu runs at the full boost fine+-1950Mhz and hits 85c at max iv seen
Cpu i have never seen above 50c, the mugen is an amazing cooler
Case temps and other sensors on the motherboard never go above 45c (HWinfo64)
I have 140mm noctua industrial fans. 2 intake 1 outtake.

-Other:
I used to run a slight overclock in the cpu but removed it and have the same problem, now running default bios settings.
Windows and all other drivers are up-to-date, cant find anything newer, also rolled back the gpu drivers several times but did not change performance.
Had this problem for months now, reinstalling windows did not help, i also rebuilt and cleaned the entire pc. The gpu is using 2 seperate power cables as requested by the manual of the psu.

Out of options so asking for help, something is not right but i cant find anything out of order.

-When:
During gaming, doesnt matter what as long as its not some ancient game.
So only when gaming? What does, "as long as its not some ancient game" mean. Does that mean it never happens on older games, or that it always happens?

Since everything depends on good, clean, stable power, I would swap in a spare PSU and see what happens. Yes, you have a good PSU, but even the best makers can make a unit that fails to meet specs, or fails prematurely.

You might also try running with one stick of RAM (assuming you currently have 2 x 8GB).

I mean it happens on modern games but when i play an old game like skyrim or Halo CE or Original SwBattlefront it doesnt happen.
When i try other games like Elite or CBP 2077 then sometimes i have a few minutes or at best half hour of gaming then its done.
The sound keeps looping and the picture freezes and cant do any input.

The PSU is brand new and did the same thing with my old Antec 650w
Have no spare parts to try. Could try with 1 stick.

As stated in first post, latest driver clean installed via ddu, also tried several other older drivers.
Will try the ram trick tonight.

thanks for the reply !

Sounds like the GPU core went bad at the worst time! (unless it's the CPU)

Sorry about the updated drivers. And not sure I would call that a RAM "trick" but let us know what happens.

I'd suggest installing Afterburner and use an aggressive fan curve to bring that tempo down a few extra degrees. You could try to see if HWinfo64 shows a hotspot sensor and check that temp.

I started memtest this afternoon its been running for 5 hours now at 45% :s

dont know if it makes a difference but the sound always continues so something keeps running in the pc ?

Do note MemTest86, like all software based memory testers are good, but none are 100% conclusive. If they report any errors, even one, the RAM is bad. But it is not uncommon for them to report no problems, yet the RAM still fails in use, and/or when paired with other RAM. So, swapping in all new RAM is often the best test - but of course, not everyone has a bunch of spare RAM laying around.
dont know if it makes a difference but the sound always continues so something keeps running in the pc ?
Well, that does suggest the computer is not completely locked. I also note you are not alone there: game locks up but sound continues - Bing

I guess the pc is not completely "dead" at the moment, i mean the sound had to be produced and sent through the audio port.

i had a go with the app "who crashed"

And it points to the video driver ? I installed the latest one with DDU following the guide and tried several older ones too.
Am i getting a BSOD without actually seeing it ?

try down-clocking the video card core and memory 100 MHz and see if you still get the crash. I hate to say it, but you may have a failing video card (and this is a terrible time for that to happen).

Just triple checking every single setting i can and see if i missed anything found nothing special other than g-sync being turned on which my iiyama does not have.
The downclocking is thru afterburner i presume.

yes, or whatever OC'ing software you have installed.

no OC software of any kind, i now remember long time ago when i got the card it couldnt handle the auto overclock form afterburner

like I said, try down-clocking it. Remember, a 1080TI running at 1600 MHz is better than a 1950 MHz capable 1080TI that doesn't work.

I use afterburner myself

The next steps would be to eliminate variables.

Do you experience the same issues with the dGPU uninstalled running off integrated graphics. Tried different GPU slots / reseating?

Trying a single RAM stick at a time is a good idea, also make sure to try different slots as well.

Have you tried running Intel's processor diagnostic tool? https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005567/processors.html

Do these issues persist with a clean windows install?

Did the underclock and played for an hour, but on 1080p havent tried the full 1440p yet. no crash and even got 10fps more in scenes that would grind to a halt.

Keep it down-clocked and start looking/saving up for a new video card. When you said the card wouldn't take any kind of OC when you got it, and now it won't run at stock speeds, all tells me it's on it's way out the door.

Check the warrantee on your 1080ti. If it's still under warrantee, start the rma process.

now running default bios settings.
Did the underclock and played for an hour,

How did you restore the default settings? Did you undo your previous settings or do a full reset of the BIOS? If you simply undid previous changes, I would suggest a full reset (pull the CMOS battery or move the reset jumper - after unplugging from the wall of course) just to ensure "all" user changes have been reset back to the defaults.

Then see what happens.

While it is possible the card is slowly failing, the fact it works fine on some games but not others suggests to me a driver issue, not hardware "failing" - assuming proper voltages and temperature control.

You have tried another PSU so it likely is not due to improper voltages or insufficient current. I might suggest opening the side panel and blasting a desk fan in there. While your temps appear to be fine, not all heat sensitive devices have sensors or are monitored.

I selected the BIOS "default settings" i can save and load different profiles.

Iv had others say mine is thermal throttling. highest iv ever seen is 85c.

But with fresh paste, clean heatsink and noctua fans providing clean in and out take what else can i do :/ im going to try again tonight with a serious test and keep an eye on the temps with afterburner

Again, there are other devices besides the CPU, chipset/system, and GPU that are heat sensitive and, if they get too hot, can become unstable. Just because the monitored devices stay below thermal thresholds, that does not mean you still don't have a heat issue.

Did the underclock and played for an hour, but on 1080p havent tried the full 1440p yet. no crash and even got 10fps more in scenes that would grind to a halt.
Another thing you might want to try if the games that are crashing support it is switching the API from DX12, DX11, and Vulcan.

Played for 3 hours straight now, havent done that in months.
not a single crash and the 1080 shows +-1840mhz around 80-84c, never goes slower.

try again tonight, did the silly little underclock did its magic or something else that suddenly fixed or just sheer luck :D

great! now change the gpu fan profile in AB to something more aggressive.
